We screened the new 4k DCP of N x NW today at our intimate little Playhouse.

37 feet wide.

An absolutely brilliant restoration from WB/MPI.

Perfect graIn. Perfect color. Clean. Stable.

The couple of continuity problems are intact.

Sound was glorious.

Would I change anything? Possibly one shot.

Other than that…

136 minutes of 4k perfection.

I advise that before the film arrives on disc, make an effort to catch it theatrically. On 4k. Not 70mm.

It was stunning. Perfection. My jaw was hitting the floor at the main titles. I thought the prior showing several years ago revealed detail I'd never seen - which was correct at the time - but this takes the cake. A perfect presentation, as always, and a fine Q&A afterward.

That glorious sound I smell? Was the sound for the 4K DCP presented in OG Mono or Multi Channel? (which I am confident that it was heard in for 4K showing.)

For now, I believe the mix on the 4K (as I don't count the 70mm mix, for the safety of accuracies' sake) comes allegedly from the same 5.1 mix as heard in the DVD/BD I believe was updated, compared to the 2000 DVD?]

When is WB and Res Team is gonna deliver us a better sounding Mono Mix via lossless DTS-HD MA 2.0 option (rolling the dice for a minimum attenuation on the in terms of Detail, Hiss and Noise Reduction) than the after 40 year old 1984 MGM/UA LD, beats me. Keep circulating the tapes, that is?

How a remixed or an updated mix is made (you may have heard before):

How do I put it?

A: Make sure the music master tapes are recorded in stereo (Score was recorded that way, was it?),
B: Retain the Mono (for this film) and Dialogue and Effects stems
C: Sync and Time the both Music Masters and Dialogue/SFX and sound restorer/mixer should have a fancy sounding mix *, When they feel they can't find any sound oddities during their mixing stage.

* That of course depends on whether or not the Dialogue/SFX have from panning effect from Left to right (Dialogue-wise)

Is that how the average sound lab/restoration house do it?

With that curiosity put to question, do you think that (after the Theatrical 70mm Blow-up/DCP runs are through) George Feltenstein and Co. [through WB PPCS (for Sound facilities, that is?)] are willing to resurface the OG Mono Mix for 4K UHD/Remastered BD?

You may check the post for inaccuracies.

I rest my case.

So, all these reports of middling color (same with The Searchers) and being underwhelmed were because the 70mm prints look like that or are being projected improperly. Anyway, glad to have this report and very anxious to see the color.

Correct.

The presentation looked like an original print derived from the VVLA source in 1959. There were details in clothing, hair, and the XLS in the cropduster sequence that have always been hidden.

Absolutely thrilling!

All intact, and without the need of a 70mm print.

I’d love to. Is there any way to find a theatrical schedule for this? Google doesn’t seem to turn up anything for me.

This is really, really fantastic news! Undoubtedly my favorite Hitchcock film. Hopefully, the disc release will mirror the quality of the DCP to the best of the technology's ability. Thanks for the report, Mr. Harris!

North by Northwest and Ben-Hur in 4K are the two 65th Anniversary movies I want the most this year. Still No news about Ben-Hur. They must be working on it. ...........It sure would make a Great Christmas present ! :emoji_santa: :emoji_christmas_tree: :D

After yesterday's presentation we were treated to an intriguing verbal history of color in cinema by RAH, starting at the turn of the last century, continuing through the phases of Technicolor, leading up to and including the color in NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Could I pass an exam on it? Probably not, but I followed much of it and could have listened for hours longer. Janet Maslin, former NY Times critic, moderated, and the Q&A afterwards was equally enlightening and entertaining. The below snapshot is posted with permission.

I do miss living in L.A. sometimes, but there are rewards to be had in the northeast. Presentation at the Bedford Playhouse is perfection itself, with state of the art installations and proper uses of curtain, dimming, masking, etc., the way we used to be accustomed to these things. Thanks to RAH for bringing NxNW in at first opportunity, and for the generosity in nurturing his audience’s continuing education.

It’s over In most situations.
No one in Hawthorne, NV is that nuts about film or movies that they really care about 35mm, 16mm, Super 8, or even VHS. In Los Angeles, maybe, but in a small rural town two hours from Reno, most just want a good way to see both classics and more recent theatrical releases with good projection and sound. Ms. Bowling just doesn't seem to get it.

I think all of us appreciate a film print made from a film negative, but once it goes into the digital domain, it should remain in the digital domain. Pushing it back onto film adds nothing to the presentation. At best.

We generally do not, unless there’s a special purpose. It negates the ability to speak freely.

And I can tell you that Sunday’s discussion was not meant for entertainment. It was a technical deep dive.
