I'm in the search for a new TV... thinking of either buying the Samsung 50" DLP or the Mitsubishi 55" Diamond Series.

My problem is spending over $4k for a tv. Should I be looking at a less expensive tv for now and wait for future products?

Any advice would be helpful.

Personally, I would spend less now and upgrade to something much better later unless you're already upgrading from an existing HDTV. There are good RPTVs in that size range to be had for much less. Certainly, I would not spend a whole lot on a CRT-based RPTV due to the burn-in risks. But that's just me.

Also, you should consider building the cost of ISF calibration into your budget. Doesn't make much sense to spend so much $$$ and not get the TV all tweaked out to its best.
