I am looking forward to this release, but have never seen either version. Since the story line is very similar, which should be watched first for the most enjoyment of the story?

    Thanks

I'd advise to you watch the 1950s remake in colour first. It's visually more appealling, and because censorship was slightly laxer in the 1950s than when the original movie was made, what was going on is a little more explicit (I don't mean pornographic, just that the story is a little clearer). You'll then be able to read the subtext of the original movie rather more easily. Also, the first movie was made when Japan was a rather militaristic place and some of the sentiments are rather more 'official party line' then in the second (which arguably more accurately reflect the director's sentiments).

When I just read the thread title, I began to write a reply that suggested watching the 30s version first. And if you already like Ozu and silent films, this is still my suggestion, as I think that it is interesting to see how the director made changes—some of which are possible because of technology, some because of a changed political climate—and perhaps some because the director had changed.

But having read Andrew’s response, if you are not so anal as I, you will be well served by following his advice.
