Hey,

I am helping a friend build his new home theater. He is looking to spend $2000 for receiver/speakers. I am aiming for a Sony AS4ES. However, I dont know jack about speakers and need a) some suggestions of speakers (5.1 for now) in the $1000-$15000 range total and more importantly, b) where, locally, in the greater DC area I can audition these?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh

I have just done a bunch of research at a similar price point for my brother in Falls Church. This is a list of brands and the dealers near Falls Church:

Paradigm and NHT @ Audio Buys in Manassas
B&W and DefTech @ Myer-Emco in Falls Church (many loc's)
Energy @ Soundworks in Kensington
Polk @ Graffiti in Bethesda (and several other loc's)

I have listened to everything but NHT and Energy at a higher budget and everyone had something good although I ended up with none of these brands (ended up with Dynaudios).

Best of Luck

Josh,

Matthew's post above basically lists all of the retailers in the Wash. DC area. I live in Fairfax and have been to all of them except Soundworks. BTW, I bought my Paradigms at Audio Buys and my receiver at Myer-Emco.

Also, there is a new retailer on Rte. 50 in Falls Church near Annandale Road that sells JM lab, Rotel, PSB, NAD and Legacy. I cannot recall their name.

I purchased from Soundworks in MD, I talked with the owner Mike and he gave me a better deal than internet pricing(including delivery) on my Klipsch HT. They have speakers that range in price from affordable to I wish.

That place on Rt 50 has great service as well, it's called Sound Images. There's also a few new Tweeter's here(one's right by the Myer-Emco in Falls Church, which in turn is within a few miles of Sound Images mentioned above). There's also a closer Graffiti Audio closer than Bethesda, it's in Fairfax.

Here's some links to help you out, just use the store locators:

http://www.myer-emco.com/
http://www.audiobuysinc.com/
http://www.graffitiaudio.com/
http://www.giftedlistener.com/
http://www.soundworksonline.com/

It's great to live in such a busy area, there's many choices!
