I've gone through all the posts on this thread so far (twice), and tell me I am blind, but not ONE person mention Gone with the Wind ???

Bernado Bertolucci's 1900 and Last Emperor.

Paul Verhoeven's Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange).

Hiroshi Inagaki's Chushingura (1962).

In addition to the above excellent choices:
War and Peace (1956)
The Brother Karamazov (1958)
Nicholas and Alexandra
Dr Zhivago
The Postman
Once Upon a Time in America
The Robe
Ryan's Daughter
How the West Was Won
The Right Stuff
I could go on, but it is someone else's turn to add to the list! :)

I think in one of the earlier posts, somebody mentioned there's only ONE: Ben Hur, well there are two of them (Heston was a remake of the silent version), and I think they are both of EPIC proportion;).
And a few more (ought to be popular) choices:
Doctor Zhivago
Passage to India
Gandhi
Fall of the Roman Empire
Wings (1927, first ever Best Picture Oscar)
Patton
and a real personal choice: Brazil.

The fun thing about a list like this is I bet most of us will see something that we say, "How could I have forgotten that??". War and Peace is one of those for me;) .

Actually, both Ben-Hur's (I wouldn't call the 1907 version an epic), any David Lean films after Kwai, Abel Gance's Napoleon, and Citizen Kane.
My term of epic is that the film's visuals, acting, and sound use is used to perfection (well, the sound part can't go for silents except for many of the excellent scores.) and the movie is fun to watch.
When I see Lawrence of Arabia (Which IMO is a perfect film.), I am totally taken in by the visuals, the great acting, and timing. The thing that makes an epic is the overwhelming and presentation.
I pick Kane mainly because it STILL has a daring visual look (A breath of relief after seeing generic cinematography in recent films) and great acting.
Films like CK and LoA pushed the limits of cinema that still haven't been pushed up farther...even films like Titanic and Pearl Harbor.

"Epics" should be defined, to me (not to mention the dictionary) as "really really big". "Sweeping".
Full of big stories, big casts, big places, and big ideas. Preferably more two or more of those.
Although sometimes a film can overcome that limit and become "epic" in it's own right. The Time Machine, for example, is a story about one man; hardly epic. But his journey and the concepts transcend the limit and turn this classic into an "epic". To me, at least. The Black Hole is another one like that (don't laugh).
On the other hand, Cocoon is more of an intimate film in many ways, and doesn't break through to epic status for me.
I'm frankly shocked that Star Wars doesn't seem to be mentioned yet, but maybe I missed it. Here are some others I'll elevate, trying hard to skip ones already named:
  • Apollo 13
    Becket
    The Black Hole
    Bonnie and Clyde
    Braveheart
    Camelot
    Casablanca
    Chariots of Fire
    Citizen Kane
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
    Dante's Peak
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
    From Here to Eternity
    Glory!
    In Harm's Way
    Jurassic Park
    Land of the Pharoahs
    Logan's Run
    Midway
    Planet of the Apes (1968)
    Rocky
    Saving Private Ryan
    Somewhere in Time
    The Time Machine
    Tora! Tora! Tora!
    Twister
    War of the Worlds
    When Worlds Collide

Feel free to debate amongst yourselves... :D

Napoleon has been on VHS for a long time via Universal.

Amazon.com has it (unless its OOP) and it's pretty good.

Stereo surround audio and the 3-panel finale is letterboxed (although cropped and compressed)
