ok. this is my chance. while there's very little choice of posts to which to respond, maybe people will be bored enough to throw a few opinions my way (they didn't before the crash...)

i have heard quite often, lately, that amplifiers that use global negative feedback sound worse than amplifiers that don't use it.

does anyone have experience with this?

i am wondering about, for instance, bryston amplifers versus BAT or Theta amps (neither of the latter 2 use global feedback).

anyone want to take a kick at this can?

Hey let's keep this thread going. I don't even know what global negative feedback is. Maybe somebody can come here and enlighten us about global negative feedback while also answering the original question of which sounds better: with or without.

    yohan,
here's a link that explains it - it's perhaps a little technical, but probably does a better job than any summary i could come up with...

There's no substitute for hearing for yourself.

I've designed some commerical amps years ago, and some custom amps in the last 6-7 years. Without exception, reducing global feedback while increasing individual stage linearity has produced better sounding amps.

Currently, my favorite amp is an Ayre V-5, designed by a friend of mine that used to work for me a long time ago.

Where I live, I don't know any "audiophiles", but a couple of friends back in Colorado that I've gotten to listen to one of these have both bought one based on that experience.

The Theta and BAT amps are good units also. Give 'em all a listen- recalibrate your expectations of what amplifiers can sound like- or not sound like!

    Best regards,

    Jon

In my vast experience (!) I've found that the only good amplifiers are the expensive ones.

LMAO. Damn, that was nothing short of brilliant. You should send that in to Stereophile. (Or perhaps "Listener.")
