I am building a new HT that is 16' wide X 19' long. I want to put a large screen so I can place my speakers behind. I will be buying acoustically transparent screen material and framing it to self-hang from ceiling. I am new to projectors and I am running my video cables soon, how far back from the screen do these 1080p projectors need to be to get maximum (clear) size?

As mentioned earlier, the throw range is different for different projectors. To get the maximum size, you need a projector that is capable of a relatively short throw.

For example, a Sony VPL-VW40 has a minimum throw of 1.4x screen width. If you end up with a 15' (180") lens to screen distance, this will mean a maximum of 128" 16:9 screen width. 180" / 1.4 = 128 (approximately).

If you have an InFocus IN83, which has a minimum throw if 1.85x, you would have a maximum screen size 97" 16:9 screen width. 180" / 1.85 = 97" approximately).

Another factor is your seating distance, as you may not actually want the largest size that will physically work. It may be overwhelming for you.

What is your seating distance going to be for your primary seating?
