I'm diving headfirst into Asian horror DVDs and I'm learning that it can be difficult to pick which release to buy and from where. Some movies are released in Japan, Korea, and China with (I'm guessing) different features and audio/subtitle options. On top of that, I'm trying my best to not pick a bootleg site to buy from. For starters, can you guys tell me where you go for your non R1 releases? I've been looking at dddhouse.com and us.yesasia.com so far.

Can you play those non R1 dvds on an R1 dvd player? Or do you have to buy a non R1 dvd player?

Some players can be "hacked" to play non-R1 DVDs. (I have a basic Philips player that I got from Target about two years ago for $40 that does!) The other issue is whether or not you can view a PAL DVD on your NTSC TV. My player has a converter built in.This link has great info, just pop in the model of the player you own and it will help you out.

Thanks Eric. I'm currently in London and I'm not sure of the model number of my Sony DVD player. I'll check when I get back and that means I won't be buying DVDs here.

I found this article interesting:
What are "regional codes", "country codes" or "zone locks".

I never knew anything about region codes as I had no need to know. Now I do. Um, I will after I finish reading the article.
