Where is the "Kokomo" that the Beach Boys were referring to?

In the Song Kokomo they say "Off the Florida Keys..there's a place called Kokomo.."
As far as I have been able to find on the various maps I've looked at there is no such place in the Keys called Kokomo....what is it? Where is it? What were they talking about?

    [IMG] NO.

Seriously, is it a hotel or bar or something?
It must be by the beach as that is the theme of the song, tropical fun.

I ask because a guy I work with said that a few years ago he and his wife set out to go to every location in the song and they did....accept for the song's actual title location because they couldn't find it anywhere in the keys or off the keys & upon searching on the net for quite a while I couldn't find it either.

It does not exist. The BB basically said it was a made up place that sounded tropical, not realizing that it was a real place in Indiana.

A local Key West band does a song called "Key Lime Squeeze" that parodies Kokomo...

"Off the Florida Keys, there's no such place as Kokomo
As far as us natives know.... no no no

Salami, bologney, man they're really phoney"

When I was around 6, I thought it was referring to Kokomo, IN. I grew up 15 miles away. [IMG]

Well Excuuuuuse Me, I'm not from FL so why shouldn't I think it was real...plus all the other places they mention in the song are actual locations.

Cmon Mark, you know nobody lives in Cape Cod, they live on Cape Cod.

I had no idea Dawson's Creek took place on the Cape (if that's the show you are speaking of).

From what I have seen of the show. all of about 20 minutes of it I had the feeling it took place ON or around the cape.

I remember reading about this when the show first came on the air and it was either filmed in or took place in North Carolina. I don't remember which. (Maybe both?)

Just a stone's throw from Schaeffer City, down the road from Splitsville, along the Boulevard of Broken dreams...

I hear you can see it from Shangri-La. [IMG]

Three things to say on this one:

    1. I was born in Kokomo.
    2. Whenever I have to give my birthplace on a form, people mention that song.
    3. I fucking hate that song.

Also not realizing that Kokomo, IN was the polar opposite of what the song implied. [IMG]
They do have a shitload of stoplights, which if you pretend they are palm trees makes the place rather tropical.
