I know it's been asked before but this is really overdue. It's a classic that needs a new annie transfer and some extras. Heck, even my old VHS had a documentary!!!

Any news...???

I agree. MGM needs to revisit this title along with another Dustin Hoffman classic The Graduate. Both are long overdue for special editions with new anamorphic transfers.

YES! Ananamorphic
MIDNIGHT COWBOY and
THE GRADUATE-SEs are 'must-do' s, MGM.

and of course
ROBOCOP SE
THE GREAT ESCAPE SE
FARGO SE
THE ALAMO Roadshow

and while youre at it:

RUNAWAY TRAIN SE
LIFEFORCE SE
ANNIE HALL SE

or just make them 16x9 for golly's sake!

oh...and another suggestion for MGM:

buy back these 2 previous properties of yours, and do them right,
as we know only you can-
2 new candidates for Midnite Movies: (16x9 and cleaned up)
GORGO(roan?)
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN(we all know who)

i know, im dreaming, but hey-

Criterion's laserdisc had a commentary by John Schlesinger and Jerome Hellman. Licensing that would certainly be a start.

For those simply looking for a better presentation of the film, the UK disc is (despite claims to the contrary on the box) already anamorphic, and as good an image as we're likely to see for quite some time.

MGM used to license many titles out to Criterion for laserdisc release, especially many of their classic titles that are now handled by Warner. I wonder if the current administration at MGM's home video department just isn't interested in revisiting those previous Criterion releases (the ones they still have the rights to, of course) or what...

Warner owns the rights to the film.

Could be a good chance in the future for
a SE, as the studio loves to revisit popular
classic titles.

Not as far as I can tell. As Gordon points out, this was a United Artists film, and so was never part of the group of films that Turner bought that eventually ended up with Warner. Also, the one DVD release of the film has come from MGM, which is still in print, and there hasn't been any sort of re-release from Warner (as there has been with other MGM titles that Warner acquired).

It may not be a good DVD, but it is one helluva movie! :D

I like the MGM Special Editions. I think that when MGM goes all-out on a classic or cult favourite, they more than do the film justice.

"I peed my pants." :frowning:

You know what guys? I goofed.

In my head I imagined MIDNIGHT COWBOY in a
Warner snapper case. Wasn't until I read your
comments that I actually looked in my library
and saw that it was....gasp!....a MGM release.

I deeply apologize for the error. I don't like
stating things that are blatantly wrong, and I
am a little embarrassed over my error.

Sadly, folks, I heard a while back that John Schlesinger was quite seriously ill. This probably explains his lack of input into the MARATHON MAN disc. I don't know what the situation is now, but I'm sure I speak on behalf of all HTF members in wishing him well and hoping he's on the mend.

May he rest in peace. :frowning:

I was at a friend's place recently and she asked us what movie we'd liked to see. She started naming off the choices starting with Midnight Cowboy, a movie she owned but apparently hadn't seen yet. She didn't have to continue naming the movies she had because I told her that's the one, another friend of mine agreed. We watched it and after it was over during the credits I said to our host, "Good movie huh?" She said "Great movie!"

I'm interesting in an SE version of this movie even though I just bought the version that's out now. I like the booklet that comes with it but there needs to be a documentary or two devoted to this classic film. I just wish it had been done before Mr. Schlesinger's passing.

Midnight Cowboy desperately needs a new SE. I'd buy it without even thinking.
as does The Graduate! MGM!!!!
And while you're at it, give us a director's cut of Return of The Living Dead:D
