Where does HD come from? (1 Viewer)

This is probably a stupid question, but when a premium channel like HBO broadcasts in high definition, what do they use as a source? I always kinda figured that studios sent them some sort of tape or dvd, but these aren't HD.
Anyone know?

Well, DreamWorks told us last night that they send their HD masters on D5 tape.
