Where can I purchase Snapper Cases? (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone!
Sorry if the following has been asked before, or if I'm posting this in the wrong place, but I'm a new user (and I did try a search on this and came up with zip).
Okay, here goes...
Does anyone know where I can purchase a large quantity of the dreaded Snapper Cases... about 100+ of them? I've searched high and low, and came up completely empty -- even my favorite company, Bags Unlimited, cannot get their hands on these things (they've tried and tried, and manufacturer Ivy Hill refuses to sell to them). A couple years ago, I did find one schmuck on the web who wanted something ridiculous like $2.50+ for each Snapper... needless to say, that was a total rip-off.
And since I'm sure many of you will want to know WHY I'D actually want so many Snappers, here it is: I've got 100+ DVD test samples/screeners with matching cardboard covers, but no Snappers to put them in to. And I'd really like to put the discs and covers properly together. (Not to mention an additional few discs that have broken hubs that need replacing...)
Just as an FYI, apparently manufacturer Ivy Hill only sells/gives empty Snapper Cases to their distributors (i.e. Warner, Image, etc.). My understanding is that they sell the Snappers in boxes of 200 each for $20.00 per box.
Anyway, if anyone knows where I can purchase such a large quantity of Snappers, I'd be most appreciative. Better still, if anyone knows where I can get a full box of 200 empty Snappers, that would be fantastic!
Many thanks in advance for any help you folks can give me on my quest!
Best wishes,
Jeff

I tried to get some from Digital Eyes about 2 or 3 months ago and I think they're out of them. The reason that they had some (and no other e-tailer did) is because they were selling alot of DVDs to someone who was located outside of the states. He didn't want the plastic cases. So they sold the cases on their website. As far as I know, they're all gone.

Uh, oh, I've been found out... time to go into hiding again...
biggrin.gif

Hi Cees! And Steve...a major "Hi!" to you. Wow, it's been a while, hasn't it? How have you been? What's new?
And as you said, Cees, I'm not really a "new member" -- Actually, I've been hanging around here at the HTF for a long, long time, but I remained lurking around in the background just reading and enjoying. I'm not entirely sure why I never took the plunge and signed up as a member... I just never did. But a couple of days ago I just finally went ahead and did so, and not only because I had the Snapper question. After reading some recent postings here, I realized that I could actually "fill in the blanks," so to speak, and provide these folks with some proper answers. So I took the plunge.
I may not be updating "LaserRot" anymore, but I still really like keeping in touch with the DVD industry, and having been "in the biz" for about 15 years, it's hard to let go (not that I want to). As far as I'm concerned, the HTF is one of the best places around -- it's a great informational site -- and I'd personally like to help provide some answers to questions when I can, or provide announcements for upcoming DVD releases when I can (when they haven't already been announced elsewhere). To tell the truth, there's a lot of information floating around in that noggin' of mine, and it would be nice to be it to some use again... so I'll see what I can help out with here if that's okay...

(Also Cees, as a sidenote, I have been also been lurking around various DVD and LD related newsgroups over the past few years posting information and whatnot, but I stopped due to excessive rudeness by some of the members. I also got rather tired of providing info due to the overall childish behaviour that seems to have invaded most of the newsgroups out there. I addition, I've helped out a couple of DVD websites by providing information and/or corrections to their data or reviews. But at least one "Big" website out there will never get any corrections from me again...both the reviewer and the website owner both told me to bugger off in a not-so-nice manner. Sheesh...where did manners disappear to? Anyway, so that's where else I've been "hiding" in the recent past, and I'm extremely glad that I found HTF a couple years ago.)

Warning for casual readers: I'm going to be talking about myself for a little bit, so this might be either really confusing or really boring for many of you. But it you used to be a reader of "Pond Scum" or "LaserRot" and want to know where I'd disappeared to, well, now is your chance. I realize that this is definitely way off topic, and quite long, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who might be annoyed or potentially-offended by the following. But please...I ask for your tolerance for a short while in this regard so I can fill in the details for the people who are interested. Many, many thanks!

Okay, Cees, you asked, so I'm going to answer. What have I been doing over the past few years. Well, the easiest thing to say is that I'm still hanging in there. The more realistic thing to say is that I've been having a tough time of it due to my illness. I know I posted some stuff on my website about this back in '98, but I can't remember exactly what I disclosed anymore so I'm probably going to repeat myself here at some point.
Basically, I had a hemhorrage on 05/30/1998 with some tumors in my spinal cord at C4, C5 & C7 (neck area). This left me with severe nerve damage and severe chronic pain, and several partially-paralyzed parts -- mainly my left leg and my entire right arm/hand below the elbow). I can move my right arm and fingers somewhat, but I can't feel anything and my grip is so bad that I can barely hold the weight of a pencil. That right arm paralysis is part of what kept me from updating "LaserRot" -- I'm right handed, and not having a usable hand to write with or type with anymore really cramps ones' writing style. (Sure, I'm typing now, but it's two-fingered and a really, really slow process...and thank god for spell checkers!). As for the leg, I have to use a cane to keep upright (a really cool, hand-made walnut one), but I can only hobble around for a very short while; anything longer and it's into the wheelchair I go (also cool... an awesome dark-purple Quickie GPV Competition sports model... I figure if I have to been disabled, I'm definitely going to do it in style and not look like a total dork).
As for the rest of what's been going on with me, it also turns out that I have a very rare, nasty (and evil, vile and icky...) genetic disease called Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (aka "VHL" -- tons of info at http://www.vhl.org
Well, that's everything I've been dealing with over since mid-1998. That was waaaaay longer than I was planning, so sorry about the length. I have this thing when I start writing -- I want to write a few paragraphs, and before I know it I've completed a novella. :eek
* * *
Back in the world of Snapper cases, thanks for the clues. I'll try out Groove Ent. and see if they can help me at all. I've actually tried having some friends at two DVD companies purchase a case of Snappers for me -- these companies both regularly received loads of cases -- but the companies wouldn't resell them to me nor would they allow me to place any order for a case through them. I was happy when one of my buddies actually managed to get me five of these things.
So if anyone from Warner or Ivy Hill is out there and has some compassion from one your longtime reviewers, please let me purchase a case of Snappers!!! Thanks...
* * *
But I'm going on my way for now. This has taken me nearly three hours to write (no kidding!) -- and my first version of this was completely lost after I previewed it and hit "submit" (it just vanished after I received a message to "fill in all fields") -- and needless to say I'm completely exhausted. So off I go.
I hope this answers all your questions, Cees, and anyone else out there who was also wondering. And Steve...great to hear from you and see you here at HTF!!! (We'll have to speak more in the future... maybe you can sucker me someday into doing something cool especially for the HTF...) .
Best wishes to all,
Jeff

Hi Jeff
I work at hollywood video, and we are in the process of converting our titles to a "vegas style" presentation, requiring that we do this snapper conversion on all the cases. Therefore, all the snappers get thrown away. Go into your HW video and ask. Perhaps they would give them to you.

Jeff,
I don't know you :) but hang in there and good luck with the snappers.
I did read your post and am not sure I got it right, but if your left hand is functioning as per the original spec, there are one-handed keyboard alternatives.
Check out http://www.tifaq.com ; it's the typing injury FAQ site but they also have a database of alternative data entry solutions. Might be something there to help you write in case you need to compose further epics!

Robyn & Kimmo,
I thank you both for your suggestions.
Robyn -- I contacted six local Hollywood Video in my area, with another two to call (I can't believe there are that many stores here...). With the exception of one store, the managers of the remaining five are holding all their snappers for me, as well as any other cases they are discarding. I'm supposed to go in on Friday to all the stores to pick up the cases, so we'll see how successful this is -- each store was estimating a minimum of 30-50 snappers, so I'm hopeful that I can get the full amount I was looking for. Many, many thanks for your tip!!!
Kimmo: I haven't had a chance to check out your suggestion yet, but I'm going to shortly and see what they have to offer. Thanks!
Best,
Jeff

It's said that broken snappers are readily replaced by Warner, but one has to send in the broken snapper
Thanx for this information Cees. Will Warner replace the snapper cases with broken spindles as well?
Does anyone have a link for more information? I have browsed Warner's site but I have not found any information on how to do a one for one replacement of broken snapper cases.

Robyn... you are the GREATEST!
A million thanks for your "Hollywood Video" suggestion -- the managers of nearly all the stores did save the cases for me, and I actually managed to get just enough snapper cases to fulfill my needs!!! Woohoo!!!
I didn't really think it would happen, especially when I recounted the number of snappers I needed. I originally thought I need just a little over 100 snappers; but after counting them it was actually more like a little over 200 snappers (I swear it doesn't look like that many is sitting there on the shelves...)
The first store I went into to pick up the cases wound up giving me a box of some very strange keep cases instead (they are the lockable ones). When I spoke with the manager, it turned out that he didn't have a clue what "snapper cases" were or what I had meant when I explained it to him originally. And even after I showed one to him, he still didn't get understand what I was looking for. Yikes! Needless to say, my hopes on getting any snappers dropped significantly after this...
But when I went to the next store, I struck gold...errr, plastic! The manager there was definitely on the ball, and she had about 80 snappers saved for me. I actually went back about 4 days later because she had another 40 or so snappers for me.
Another location had a little over 100 snappers saved for me, which made my day. I actually have to go back next week, because they were still working on the conversion and said there should be another 30 or 40 snappers they can give me.
And the other couple of stores? Well, one store had another manager who didn't understand what I was talking about when I described the snappers, and saved a bunch of those weird locklable keep cases for me. When I described them again, she suddenly understood what I was talking about, and pulled a single snapper out for me. Turned out that was the only snapper they had in the entire store (a copy of "V") -- they literally had no other Warner, Image, etc. titles. As for the other remaining store, turned out they didn't have anything saved for me at all (and judging from what they were working on, it would have been more keep cases instead of any snappers).
In any event, again, I actually managed to get all the snappers I needed, along with a few extras to replace some broken cases, and now have a few left to cover those snappers that might break in the future. And if that other store comes through with any additional snappers, then I'm going to have some very relieved friends as well...
Many, many thanks Robyn for your suggestion -- it is very much appreciated!!!!
Best,
Jeff

Glad I could help! I saved all the ones from my store that I processed, and I'm certain that I walked away with at least 160 cases, with probably another 40-50 that are on the shelf waiting to be finished. I'm glad you got what you needed!

Man, I missed out. I called the 2 locations nearest me and asked about this coversion. They had already done it this past weekend, and already tossed out the snappers!
frown.gif

Darn them for being so on-the-ball!
Well, the good news is that one of the people I talked to offerred to take my name/number and call me if they get in any new ones that need to be converted. I replied that I appreciated the favor, and that all I hoped for was a dozen or so just to have for spares when one breaks. I got a pleasent person who then informed me of all the PVD's they had for sale just in the past few days, so I'll stop by anyway to pick up a few of them.
All in all, a win-win situation. Good customer service! And that means a lot coming from me.
