Working on a full in-depth review for Tuesday, but I
wanted to give everyone the earliest opportunity to
see the packaging and collector's booklet that comes
with this brand-new 2-disc Special Edition.

The only thing I can tell you about the transfer
itself is that it is VERY close to being the same
quality as the original release. The only thing I
have noticed from the first 15 minutes I have watched
thus far is that there seems to be less of a speckle
    problem.

    See you Tuesday!

Looks great. I remember when the laserdisc came out a reviewer complained that there was "this awful picture breakup" during the gymnasium scene when Tony and Maria begin their slow motion dance! (It's a special effect, not a defect in the mastering).

That set looks very nice! Can't wait until this one is released next month. I thought the previous release on DVD looked great but the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix was terrible. Hopefully this release will be a big improvement over the previous one in sound and video.

I don't own the other release, so whatever this one offers will do!

Am I reading the sticker on the cover correctly?

Does it say that this DVD will only be available for a limited time?

    Ron -

In your review can please tell us whether the Jet whistle has been restored to the end of the "Tonight Ensemble" sequence? This was omitted from the 5.1 mix of the original DVD. At the end of the number, where it dissolves into the closeup of the chainlink fence with a red filter over the screen (right before the gang fight), there is supposed to be a "Jet whistle" there before the camera pulls back from the fence.

I personally thought the original DVD looked lovely, so I'm not 100% sure I'll be buying this if they haven't fixed that audio error.

That set looks great. I probably won't buy it, since the movie isn't exactly my cup of tea.

I don't remember the old DVD DD5.1 mix/mastering being all that bad, but I haven't watched it in a while. I seem to remember it sounding a bit less digitally processed than the remixes on similar titles. BrianP, what was wrong with it besides the gaffe that Brian W. mentioned?

    Regards,

That's a good thing, IMO. The original DVD release had a very nice transfer. Very good colors.

I recently sold mine in anticipation of this SE.

    Brian,

King of Kings, made the same year, has a lot of distortion in the audio! They have worked it over to death, but apparently, this is the best it'll ever sound.

I wonder what was up with sound recording, circa 1960.

Interestingly, the Sony SBM CD soundtrack sounds great with no distortion that I can remember...

The original Columbia (Sony now) LP release when the film first came out suffered from thin sound. I also remember the theatre sound was not the greatest either. I saw it at the legendary Rivoli Theatre on Broadway in NYC during its roadshow presentation. Hopefully, the new mix will improve upon the original.
