When ht reviewers "clip" an amp, what do they really do?

I'm just wondering since these volume levels would be unbearable, are they actually in the room when they clip the amp? Maybe there's a way of clipping an amp electronically without having the sound coming out of the speakers...

It's my understanding that they test the outputs you see quoted into 8, 4 and 2 ohms "dummy" resistance loads. The "dummy" resistors are physically large enough to disipate a lot of heat due to the large input wattages.

They couldn't/wouldn't use speakers since true clipping quite often sends high frequency spikes (which eats tweeters like candy!)
