People, this postage-stamp-sized image in the linked article is above being described with mere words. Look at it and think for a moment.

Only now, at this time in the human drama, is such an image even possible. We are looking into the starry abyss and witnessing a sequence of ulimate realities in space and time.

Four galaxies colliding. Think about that--for a long, long time.

Astonishing. The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the grand marvels of human creation and creativity. We are fortunate to be alive during this thrilling moment in history.

    What Jack said [IMG]
It's overwhelmingly mind-boggling to say the least.

I couldn't find the colliding galaxy pic in the Yahoo report so here is a link to it:

Once again the Hubble blows us away! IMO it may be the best billion+ dollars ever spent by the US Government.

Seeing something like that makes it very difficult to believe that we are the only beings in the Universe who can comtemplate its meaning....

When I see pics. from the Hubble telescope, it is ‘food for me’, reminds of W.Wordsworth’s sentiments in Lines…Tintern Abbey

For I have learned to look on nature, not as in the hour
Of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes
The still, sad music of humanity,…
And I have felt a presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man:
A motion and a spirit, that impels
    All thinking things..
That in this moment there is life and food
For future years. And so I dare to hope,…
    That neither evil tongues,
Rash judgements, nor the seers of selfish men,
Nor greetings where no kindness is, nor all
The dreary intercourse of daily life,
    Shall e’er prevail against us..

Deep. Just think that in eons to come our own galaxy will collide with Andromeda. Of course, our sun will supernova before that happens. We are but a vapor....

I remember a lot of people said Hubble was a waste of money when it was first proposed. Then when it didn't perform at first they really beat their chests. I hope these people realize how foolish they were. I have always been fascinated by space. When I was a kid, I used to lie in bed at night and try to imagine infinity. It made my head hurt. The pictures we are seeing make infinity seem a little closer. The government finally got something right.

Hubble is such a smart investment, it even has its own set of glasses [IMG]
Worth every single cent it cost and about 3 times again more
