I was going to place an order with CDNow tonight and noticed a sales tax. Clicked on 'about taxes' link and got this info...

    U.S. taxes

We charge required local and state taxes for orders shipped to California, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas, South Carolina, Indiana and Illinois addresses. Some APO and FPO addresses may be charged California state tax.

CDNow was not charging me tax as late as the end of last year...anyone know when and why this took effect???

Same thing happened to me. It would've been nice to have known that was coming. Needless to say I DID NOT complete the order after seeing taxes. Cheers.

They probably opened a warehouse in your state, so they must charge sales tax

I thought so Jeff, but when I called last night the CS rep at CDNow said they have had a facility in IL for as long as he could remember. Maybe it was just an error in the past that they did not charge tax or possibly the laws in IL changed this year.
