I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am

All the world surrounds me and my feet are on the ground

I'm a very lonely man doing what I can

All the world astounds me and I think I understand

That we're going to keep growing, wait and see

When all the stars are falling down

Into the sea and on the ground

And angry voices carry on the wind

A beam of light will fill your head

And you'll remember what's been said

By all the good men this world's ever known

Another man is what you'll see

Who looks like you and looks like me

And yet somehow he will not feel the same

His life caught up in misery, he doesn't think like you and me

'Cause he can't see what you and I can see

I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am

All the world surrounds me and my feet are on the ground

I'm a very lonely man doing what I can

All the world astounds me and I think I understand

That we're going to keep growing, wait and see

When all the stars are falling down

Into the sea and on the ground

And angry voices carry on the wind

A beam of light will fill your head

And you'll remember what's been said

By all the good men this world's ever known

Another man is what you'll see

Who looks like and looks like me

And yet somehow he will not be the same

His life caught up in misery, he doesn't think like you and me

'Cause he can't see what you and I can see

Melancholy Man by the Moody Blues

Lovely to know the warmth

Your smile can bring to me

I want to tell you but the words you do not know

Sing me a lullaby

Of songs you cannot write

And I will listen for there's beauty where there's love

And in the morning of my life

and in the evening of my day

I will try to understand in what you say...

Rivers of endless tides

Have passed beneath my feet

And all too soon they had me standing on my own

Then when my eyes were closed

You opened them for me

and now we journey thro' our lives to what will be

And in the morning of my life

and in the evening of my day

I will try to understand in what you say

Through all that life can give to you

Only true love will see you through

And we'll stand beside you now in what you say

Take me into your world

Alone I cannot go

For I've been here so long

You're leaving me behind

Walk with me now

Into your land of fairytales

And open up that book of pages in my mind

And open up that book of ages in my mind

And open up that book of pages in my mind

And open up that book of ages in my mind

Emily's Song by the Moody Blues, this is a song I'll sing to any children I have

I woke up today, I was crying,

Lost in a lost world,

Cos' so many people are dying,

Lost in a lost world.

Some of them are living an illusion,

Bounded by the darkness of their minds,

In their eyes, it's nation against nation,

With racial pride, sad hearts they hide

Thinking only of themselves, they shun

The light. They think they're right

Living in their empty shells.

Oh can you see their world is crashing

Crashing down around their feet

And angry people in the street,

Are telling them they've had their fill

Of politics that wound and kill

Grow, the seeds of evolution

Revolution never won

It's just another form of gun

To do again what they have done

With all our brothers' youngest sons.

Everywhere you go you'll see them searching

Everywhere you turn you'll feel the pain

Everyone is looking for the answer

We'll look again, come on my friend

Love will find them in the end

Come on my friend we've got to bend

On our knees and say a prayer.

Oh can you feel the world is pining

Pining for someone who really cares,

Enough to share his love,

With all of us. So we can be

An ever loving family.

Have you forgotten we're all children

Children from a family tree

That's longer than a centipede

And started long ago when you

And I were only love-

I woke up today, I was crying,

Lost in a lost world,

Cos' so many people are dying,

Lost in a lost world.

Lost in a Lost World by the Moody Blues, this makes me think of September 11th

Operator, oh could you help me place this call

You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded

She's livin' in L.A.

With my best old ex-friend Ray

A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated

Isn't that the way they say it goes

But let's forget all that

And give me the number if you can find it

So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show

I've overcome the blow

I've learned to take it well

I only wish my words could just convince myself

But that's not the way it feels

Operator, oh could you help me place this call

'Cause I can't read the number that you just gave me

There's something in my eye's

You know it happens every time

I think about the love that I thought would save me

Isn't that the way they say it goes

But let's forget all that

And give me the number if you can find it

So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show

I've overcome the blow

I've learned to take it well

I only wish my words could just convince myself

That it just wasn't real

But that's not the way it feels

Operato,r oh let's forget about this call

There's no one there I really wanted to talk you

Thank you for your time

Oh you've been so much more than kind

And you can keep the dime

Isn't that the way they say it goes

But let's forget all that

And give me the number if you can find it

So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show

I've overcome the blow

I've learned to take it well

I only wish my words could just convince myself

That it just wasn't real

But that's not the way it feels

Operator by Jim Croce

A winter's day

In a deep and dark December

I am alone

Gazing from my window

To the streets below

On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock

I am an island

I've built walls

A fortress deep and mighty

That none may penetrate

I have no need for friendship

Friendship causes pain

It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

I am a rock

I am an island

Don't talk of love

Well, I've heard the word before

It's sleeping in my memory

I won't disturb the slumber

Of feelings that have died

If I'd never loved,

I never would have cried

I am a rock

I am an island

I have my books

And my poetry to protect me

I am shielded in my armor

Hiding in my room

Safe within my womb

I touch no-one and no-one touches me

I am a rock

I am an island

And the rock feels no pain

And an island never cries

I Am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel

The long and winding road that leads to your door,

Will never disappear,

I've seen that road before It always leads me here,

Leads me to your door.

The wild and windy night the rain washed away,

Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.

Why leave me standing here, let me know the way

Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried

Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried, but

Still they lead me back to the long and winding road

You left me standing here a long, long time ago

Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to you door

Da, da, da, da

Even though it'd be hard to pick a favorite lyric from many of the people I really admire (Neal Peart, Jim Matheos, Fish, etc.) lyrically. I'd have to pick Kevin Gilbert's "Song For A Dead Friend"... Even though I've heard the song a million times, it never fails to make me cry like a school girl. :b

(Also, Kevin Gilbert's "Shaming of the True" album is a masterpiece)

"Song For A Dead Friend"

Danny my friend

I think you knew me better than I ever knew you

Cause you read every chapter

And I just glossed right over them and pretended I knew

But I believed in you

I loved you for your brilliance

and your way of making everything absurd

And I relied on you

To make me see the foolishness

of paragraphs that were better as one word

What could I have told you to make you think again

We draw the same conclusions but we choose a different end

When you tear it down it only looks more ragged

And when you build it up it only looks more fake

So why not let it be at least until tomorrow

And then you just might see your sad mistake

Cause life has more to give that what you take

Danny my friend

Forgive me if I break our rule but I think it's overdue

I really cared about you

I didn't think that I could love a friend

as much as I loved you

And we were always friends

We were Captain Jim and Billy

the Super-human Crime-avenging Twins

I'm gonna miss you

I truly am alone now

because there's no one to congratulate my sins

I wish I could have been for you a more consistent friend

The chapters that I skipped I'm going to have to read again

But when I tear it down it only looks more ragged

And when I build it up it only looks more fake

But I can't let it be because part of me died with you

And there's lots of pages missing from my book

You had more to give than what I took.

Indiscipline by King Crimson

I do remember one thing.

It took hours and hours but..

by the time I was done with it,

I was so involved, I didn't know what to think.

I carried it around with me for days and days..

playing little games

like not looking at it for a whole day

and then.. looking at it.

to see if I still liked it.

I did.

I repeat myself when under stress.

I repeat myself when under stress.

I repeat myself when under stress.

I repeat myself when under stress.

I repeat..

The more I look at it,

the more I like it.

I do think it's good.

The fact is..

no matter how closely I study it,

no matter how I take it apart,

no matter how I break it down,

It remains consistant.

I wish you were here to see it.

I like it.

Yes! Let's turn this into the King Crimson lyrics thread. :)
sex sleep eat drink dream
primal tribal apple egg vegetable eel
i have a new canoe but it does not have a wheel
private velvet animal oldsmobile mind
i'm sitting in the fireplace burning up my time
private velvet animal empty t.v.
they're fishing in the kitchen
but they haven't caught up to me
primal tribal chemical digital night
i've got to get dressed to go out of my mind
sex sleep eat drink dream

Not to be a party pooper on this thread, guys, but I'm sure music company execs might see this thread. It's one thing to post a couple of lines from a song, but to post complete song lyrics is tantamount to copyright infringement, which could get Parker and Ron into trouble with groups like The Harry Fox Agency.
May I suggest you limit your quotes to key lines?

I've always had a liking for the lyrics from this song by The Church mainly because I have no idea what it's about.

Emerald haunt in overdrive

Nightmare descent into Jericho city

Camel dust heralds our arrival

New Christ beneath the drumkit moon

Oh Lord we are threatened again

In the slipstream pull of the federal men

Plummeted in some seamless night

Down here to earth it's hopeless then

Apache gunman in the boiling crowd

Who never got to meet you last time

We're interrupted by the telephone

You didn't think they were invented then

Oh Lord we need miracles

We need more wine and gold

We need slaves and roads and personal favors

We need microphones and manifolds

So now we're cruising down this shuddering highway

With a dead sun shining on my back

And we talk about the way people treat us back there

Their hollow laughter, the pain in their eyes

Oh my Lord I trust your intentions

But money strangles our love

Struggling like a fool with my junk and my jewels

You would have thought I'd had enough

or this one from Echo & the Bunnymen

Froze to the bone in my igloo home

Counting the days `til the ice turns green

You know when heaven and hell collide

There are no in-betweens

(I`m the yo-yo man)

Flames on your skin of snow turn cold

(Always up and down)

Cold is the wind that blows through my headstone

Collecting the bones of my friend tonight

Sowing the seeds in a fruitless land

You know when prayers all hit the ground

There is no higher hand

It’s hard to listen to a hard hard heart

Beating close to mine

Pounding up against the stone and steel

Walls that I won’t climb

Sometimes a hurt is so deep deep deep

You think that you’re gonna drown

Sometimes all I can do is weep weep weep

With all this rain falling down

Strange how hard it rains now

Rows and rows of big dark clouds

When I’m holding on underneath this shroud

Rain

Its hard to know when to give up the fight

Two things you want will just never be right

Its never rained like it has to night before

Now I don’t wanna beg you baby

For something maybe you could never give

I’m not looking for the rest of your life

I just want another chance to live

Strange how hard it rains now

Rows and rows of big dark clouds

When I’m holding on underneath this shroud

Rain

From the Beatles Abbey Road:
And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make

And from Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill:
You took me out to wine me, dine me, 69 me,
And didn't hear a damn word I said

That one always brings a smile to my face :)

Actually, "Ain't That Unusual" by the Goo Goo Dolls has 2 or 3 of my all time favorite lyrics:

"My life's like a made for TV movie and I just blew my line."

and

"Sorry I put all them words in your mouth but you wouldn't talk to me"

There's another good one in there, but I can't remember off hand.

In the end, it took me a diction'ry

To find out the meaning of "unrequited"

While she was giving herself for free

At a party to which I was never invited....

- Billy Bragg, "The Saturday Boy"

And if a double-decker bus

Crashes into us

To die by your side

Is such a heavenly way to die

And if a ten-ton truck

Kills the both of us

To die by your side

Well, the pleasure and the privilege is mine....

- The Smiths, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
