The title pretty much says it all. What is your favorite line(s) in a song. It can be from any genre. Just something that you think is funny, very well said, etc. Since I'm starting it, I'll go first.

One of my favorites:

"Jim don't do it, there's somethun missin'

there's fellers dancin' and fellers kissin'

there's a feller in high-heeled shoes wearin' panty-hose"

from the song Uneasy Rider 88 by Charlie Daniels. I think it is a funny song. Ok, now your turn...

The Jackson Song by Patti Smith from Dream of Life:

Little blue dreamer go to sleep

Let's close our eyes and call the deep

Slumbering land that just begins

When day is done and little dreamers spin

First take my hand now let it go

Little blue boy you're on your own

Little blue wings as those feet fly

Little blue shoes that walk across the sky

May your path be your own

But I'm with you

And each day you'll grow

He'll be there too

And someday when you go

We'll follow you

As you go, as you go

Little blue star that offers light

Little blue bird that offers flight

Little blue path where those feet fall

Little blue dreamer won't you dream it all

Refrain

And in your travels you will see

Warrior wings remember Daddy

And if a mama bird you see

Folding her wings will you remember me

As you go, as you go

As you go, as you go

A real tear jerker - especially if you have kids.

What's been done in the name of Jesus

What's been done in the name of Buddha

What's been done in the name of Islam

What's been done in the name of man

What's been done in the name of liberation

And in the name of civilization

And in the name of race

And in the name of peace!

everybody

loves to see

justice done

on somebody else

Can you tell me how much bleeding

It takes to fill a word with meaning

And how much, how much death

It takes to gave a slogan breath

And how much, how much, how much flame

Gives light to a name

For the hollow darkness

In which nations dress?

everybody

loves to see

justice done

on somebody else

Everybody's seen the things they've seen

We all have to live with what we've been

When they say charity begins at home

They're not just talking about a toilet and a telephone

Got to search the silence of the soul's wild places

For a voice that can cross the spaces

These definitions that we love create --

These names for heaven, hero, tribe and state

everybody

loves to see

justice done

on somebody else

CALL ANY VEGETABLE CALL IT BY NAME

CALL ONE TODAY WHEN YOU GET OFF THE TRAIN

CALL ANY VEGETABLE AND THE CHANCES ARE GOOD

THAT THE VEGETABLE WILL RESPOND TO YOU

(SOME PEOPLE DON'T GO FOR PRUNES... I DON'T KNOW, I'VE ALWAYS FOUND THAT IF THEY...)

CALL ANY VEGETABLE PICK UP YOUR PHONE

THINK OF A VEGETABLE LONELY AT HOME

CALL ANY VEGETABLE AND THE CHANCES ARE GOOD

THAT A VEGETABLE WILL RESPOND TO YOU

RUTABAGA, RUTABAGA,

RUTABAGA, RUTABAGA,

RUTABAY-Y-Y-Y...

(A PRUNE ISN'T REALLY A VEGETABLE... CABBAGE IS A VEGETABLE...)

NO ONE WILL KNOW

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LET THEM KNOW

NO ONE WILL KNOW

'LESS IT'S YOU THAT MIGHT TELL THEM SO

CALL AND THEY'LL COME TO YOU

SMILING AND COVERED WITH DEW

VEGETABLES DREAM, VEGETABLES DREAM,

VEGETABLES DREAM, OF RESPONDING TO YOU

STANDING THERE SHINY AND PROUD BY YOUR SIDE

HOLDING YOUR JOINT WHILE THE NEIGHBORS DECIDE

WHY IS A VEGETABLE SOMETHING TO HIDE? A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T BOTHER ABOUT THEIR FRIENDS IN THE VEGETABLE KINGDOM. THEY THINK: OH, AH, WHAT CAN I SAY? WHAT CAN A PERSON LIKE MYSELF SAY TO A VEGETABLE? BUT THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE, MY FRIENDS: JUST CALL, AND TELL THEM HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT MUFFINS... PUMPKINS... WAX PAPER... CALEDONIA, MAHOGANIES, ELBOWS... GREEN THINGS IN GENERAL... AND SOON, A NEW RAPPORT... YOU AND YOUR NEW LITTLE GREEN AND YELLOW BUDDIES, GROOVING TOGETHER... OH NO! MAINTAINING YOUR COOLNESS TOGETHER! WORSHIPPING TOGETHER IN THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE... (ONLY IN AMERICA...)

CALL ANY VEGETABLE CALL IT BY NAME

YOU GOTTA CALL ONE TODAY

WHEN YOU GET OFF THE TRAIN

CALL ANY VEGETABLE

AND THE CHANCES ARE GOOD

WOW! THAT THE VEGETABLE WILL RESPOND TO YOU!

OH NO! CAN YOU SEE THEM RESPONDING?

THE PUMPKIN IS BREATHING HARD...H-H-H-H-H-H-H-H-H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H--H!

(WHAT A PUMPKIN!)

No one knows what it's like

To be the bad man

To be the sad man

Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like

To be hated

To be fated

To telling only lies

But my dreams

They aren't as empty

As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely

My love is vengeance

That's never free

No one knows what it's like

To feel these feelings

Like I do

And I blame you

No one bites back as hard

On their anger

None of my pain and woe

Can show through

But my dreams

They aren't as empty

As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely

My love is vengeance

That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open

Before I use it and lose my cool

When I smile, tell me some bad news

Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil

Put your finger down my throat

If I shiver, please give me a blanket

Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like

To be the bad man

To be the sad man

Behind blue eyes

It's so hard to pick just one Tonio K. song, but here goes:

CINDERELLA'S BABY

(Tonio K.)

cinderella's baby

what you gonna do when the six o'clock

news gets real

what you gonna do

honey how you gonna feel

how you gonna handle it

your mommy and your daddy

didn't teach you what you really need

to know

but your mommy and your daddy had

problems of their own

cinderella's baby

they will dress you

suggest every purchase and every step

there's a rulebook been written for you

by the video set

and unless you just turn it off

and figure out what you want

they're gonna program what you find

because they work so hard at making

up your mind

but don't you believe it

when they tell you that your face won't do

and you've got to make one up

when they try to sell you the latest

miracle drug

don't you believe it

all your sisters before you fell victim

to fictional love upon love upon lover

but you just take your time

and try to figure out some kind of truth

and try to find someone who's tryin' to

figure it out

just like you

cinderella's baby

we've been bought and sold

and we don't even know their names

we've been caught and thrown to the lions

don't look for the cage

you can't see it--it's everywhere

got a feelin' that really there's only one

road left to choose

so if you'll cover for me

i'll cover for you

and don't you believe it

when they tell you that your life won't do

and you've got to make one up

don't you believe it ...

I should've known I couldn't do it.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

(Tonio K.)

the insults and the punches flew

just like they always had

i knocked her down and left the room

but she came running back

and i said:

hey look around

hey look in your mirror

lay your ego down

it'll get so much clearer

why continue to push and pull

and punish each other

when it would be so much easier

to just find another lover

now you're feelin' cold

hey babe i'm on fire

and i'm losin' control

because you've got no desire

and so we go sparring through the night

like two lightweight contenders

the flames have gone out

let's extinguish the embers

put up the flag and lay down your weapon

this perpetual battle royal here

is a long way from heaven

call it a mistake or call it whatever

let's just call it off

better late than never

now i've got you

and you've got me

but we've got no manners at all

we're still counting down to ecstasy

when some courtesy's all the situation wants

and that's so hard

so you keep the car

and all the passionate letters

they won't get you that far

they won't make it no better

and maybe someday

some other time

we can try this again

maybe someday these flamin' hearts

will learn how to be friends

but right now

put up the flag

and lay down your weapon·

My very first post on HTF were the lyrics to this song:
This is what she saw .......
The unsuspecting horse was held fast to the ground,
Whilst some soldiers slit open its belly
The guilty gypsy was shoved inside the horse's belly,
with only his head protruding from the dying beast,
Another soldier, then sewed up the wound,
with the culprit inside, condemned to die,
along with the putrifying animal, screaming
The young countess looked on,
barely restraining a giggle.

An Execution -Siouxsie and the Banshees
Another favorite from them:
You clamber up
And look behind
Their watchful eyes
The helping hands
A hen that's fierce
And painted blue
With red eyes
Wants to swallow you
A dragon dives and soars on tracks
The hands that strap you to its back
You turn around and look behind
Their smiling eyes
Won't help you down
Their tiny hands
Their tiny feet
Such little hearts
To miss a beat
Grotesque dwarves in mirrored rooms
Pulled and taut a thousand yous
Staring back through stinging tears
Remembering those funhouse thrills
The paintbox tunes and wild balloons
Their watchful eyes, you start to swoon
Oh painted vile in lurid hue
The snarling horse that waits for you
Its motor whirrs and colours curl
Inside your head the monsters whirl
Its motor whirrs and colours curl
Inside your head the monsters whirl
In sucked out
Time stood still
Roundabout back
Carousel
Time stood still
And you remember it well

3 libras : a Perfect Circle

threw you the obvious and you flew with it on your back a name in your recollection down among a million same

difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed and passed over when i've looked right through to see you naked and oblivious and you don't see me

but i threw you the obvious just to see if there's more behind the eyes of a fallen angel eyes of a tragedy

here i am expecting just a little bit too much from the wounded but i see through it all and see you

so i threw you the obvious to see what occurs behind the eyes of a fallen angel eyes of a tragedy

oh well apparently nothing

you don't see me you don't see me at all

Soldier's Things by Tom Waits (from swordfishtrombones)

Davenports and kettle drums

and swallow tail coats

table cloths and patent leather shoes

bathing suits and bowling balls

and clarinets and rings

and all this radio really

needs is a fuse

a tinker, a tailor

a soldier's things

his rifle, his boots full of rocks

and this one is for bravery

and this one is for me

and everything's a dollar

in this box

Cuff links and hub caps

trophies and paperbacks

it's good transportation

but the brakes aren't so hot

neck tie and boxing gloves

this jackknife is rusted

you can pound that dent out

on the hood

a tinker, a tailor

a soldier's things

his rifle, his boots full of rocks

oh and this one is for bravery

and this one is for me

and everything's a dollar

in this box

This always sobers me up a bit.

"So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts...

What's so amazing about really deep thoughts?

Boy you best prey that I bleed real soon.

How's that thought for ya?"

Hey, that was the first song I ever heard from Tori, that particular passage was what got me interested in her, and is the reason why I bought that album.
Gotta love Tori!

falling down blue-blue rodeo(jim cuddy-songwriter)

everyone tells me i'm lucky

got my whole life to live yet

i can't say they're wrong

but the days seem so long

living inside of my head

maybe i'll get some relief now

now that your things are all gone

i won't sit here staring

at nothing all night

bleary eyed greeting the dawn

(chorus)

all right i miss you tonight

and i'm not really sure what to say

it keeps rolling in like a slow moving train

it gets harder and harder each day

each time i think that the worst of it's through

i am stopped in my tracks by some vision of you

all right i miss you tonight

i admit that i'm falling down blue

she lived outside of the city

on days when i'd visit her there

i'd watch her out dancing

all lit by the moon

the cold winds of time in her hair

then we'd go driving for hours

turn off the lights and just glide

moving like spirits

along through the night

the light through the trees as our guide

(chorus)

Catherine Wheel's "Goodbye":

Sally likes it sideways.

Sally, oh Sally, don't ever change.

And please don't think me scary,

'cause I'm not.

I'm just a rock 'n roll Joe

with tales of woe,

and tears, and fears...

Emmylou Harris' "Red Dirt Girl" album has some outstanding lyrics -

From "Michelangelo"

Last night I dreamed about you,

dreamed that you were older.

You were looking like Picasso

with a scar across your shoulder.

You were kneeling by the river.

You were digging up the bodies

buried long ago, Michelangelo.

From "My Baby Needs A Shepherd"

My baby needs a pilot,

she has no magic wand.

To help her part the troubled waters

of the Rubicon.

But in my soul I know

she'll have to go this one alone.

After all, that is the

only way she's ever known.

It's nearly always sections of lyrics I remember. The truly memorable ones will stop me dead in my tracks the first time I hear them and thereafter they stick like glue. A small selection:

'It's the kidney machines that pay for rockets and guns'

[The Jam - Going Underground]

'Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then'

[Bob Seger - Against the Wind]

'Born on the breeze and died on the wind'

[Taupin/John - This Song Has No Title]

'If one in ten could be that brave, I would never hate again'

[Taupin/John - One More Arrow]

'Two men say they're Jesus - one of them must be wrong'

[Dire Straits - Industrial Disease]

'You men who think you have a mission

To purge us of the seven deadly sins.

Should first sort out the basic food position,

Then start your preaching - that's where it begins'

[Brecht/Weill - What Keeps Mankind Alive?]

'A windy day

The cars in slow formation

Not far away

A final destination.'

[Tennant/Lowe - Your Funny Uncle]

Full song lyrics are a bit trickier, though I can probably recite from memory 90 per cent of later period Leonard Cohen, which is definitely unhealthy.

this line immediately came to mind:

i find it kind of funny

i find it kind of sad

the dreams in which I'm dying

are the best I've ever had

"mad world" by tears for fears

also...

i don't want to start any blasphemous rumors

but i think that god's got a sick sense of humor

and when i die

i expect to find him lauging

"blasphemous rumors" by depeche mode

good grief...it's a good thing i'm not morose...

You moved like honey in my dream last night
Yeah, some old fires were burning
You came near to me and you endeared to me
But you couldn't quite discern me
Does that scare you? I'll let you run away
But your heart will not oblige you
You'll remember me like a melody
Yeah, I'll haunt the world inside you
And my big secret - Gonna win you over
Slow like honey, heavy with mood
I'll let you see me, I'll covet your regard
I'll invade your demeanor
And you'll yield to me like a scent in the breeze
And you'll wonder what it is about me
It's my big secret - Keeping you coming
Slow like honey, heavy with mood
Though dreams can be deceiving
Like faces are to hearts
They serve for sweet relieving
When fantasy and reality lie too far apart
So I stretch myself across, like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you?
As I rise to meet my glory
But my big secret
Gonna hover over your life
Gonna keep you reaching
When I'm gone like yesterday
When I'm high like heaven
When I'm strong like music
'Cuz I'm slow like honey, and
Heavy with mood

"The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home like a hungry runaway

He walks through town all alone

He must be from the fort he hears the high school girls say

His countryside's burnin' with wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide

The hit and run, plead sanctuary, `neath a holy stone they hide

They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection

Nuns run bald through Vatican halls pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception

And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood

Sticker smiles sweet as gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud

And I said "Hey gunner man that's quicksand, that's quicksand that ain't mud

Have you thrown your senses to the war or did you lose them in the flood?"

That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced

Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight

He rides `er low on the hip, on the side he's got Bound For Glory in red, white and blue flash paint

He leans on the hood telling racing stories, the kids call him Jimmy The Saint

Well the blaze and noise boy, he's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point

He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point

And there's nothin' left but some blood where the body fell

That is, nothin' left that you could sell

Just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell

And he said "Hey kid, you think that's oil? Man, that ain't oil that's blood"

I wonder what he was thinking when he hit that storm

Or was he just lost in the flood?

Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air

Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare

And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hard ware

Everything stops, you hear five, quick shots, the cops come up for air

And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street

And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose but he gets blown right off his feet

And some kid comes blastin' round the corner but a cop puts him right away

He lays on the street holding his leg screaming something in Spanish

Still breathing when I walked away

And somebody said "Hey man did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"

I wonder what the dude was sayin' or was he just lost in the flood?

Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up

I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?"

Easy:

Darkness at the break of noon

Shadows even the silver spoon

The handmade blade, the child's balloon

Eclipses both the sun and moon

To understand you know too soon

There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn

Suicide remarks are torn

From the fool's gold mouthpiece

The hollow horn plays wasted words

Proves to warn

That he not busy being born

Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door

You follow, find yourself at war

Watch waterfalls of pity roar

You feel to moan but unlike before

You discover

That you'd just be

One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear

A foreign sound to your ear

It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall

Private reasons great or small

Can be seen in the eyes of those that call

To make all that should be killed to crawl

While others say don't hate nothing at all

Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark

As human gods aim for their mark

Made everything from toy guns that spark

To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark

It's easy to see without looking too far

That not much

Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates

Teachers teach that knowledge waits

Can lead to hundred-dollar plates

Goodness hides behind its gates

But even the president of the United States

Sometimes must have

To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged

It's only people's games that you got to dodge

And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you

Into thinking you're the one

That can do what's never been done

That can win what's never been won

Meantime life outside goes on

All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear

You suddenly find you got nothing to fear

Alone you stand with nobody near

When a trembling distant voice, unclear

Startles your sleeping ears to hear

That somebody thinks

They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit

Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy

Insure you not to quit

To keep it in your mind and not fergit

That it is not he or she or them or it

That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules

For the wise men and the fools

I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority

That they do not respect in any degree

Who despise their jobs, their destinies

Speak jealously of them that are free

Cultivate their flowers to be

Nothing more than something

They invest in.

While some on principles baptized

To strict party platform ties

Social clubs in drag disguise

Outsiders they can freely criticize

Tell nothing except who to idolize

And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire

Gargles in the rat race choir

Bent out of shape from society's pliers

Cares not to come up any higher

But rather get you down in the hole

That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault

On anyone that lives in a vault

But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs

Limited in sex, they dare

To push fake morals, insult and stare

While money doesn't talk, it swears

Obscenity, who really cares

Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see

With a killer's pride, security

It blows the minds most bitterly

For them that think death's honesty

Won't fall upon them naturally

Life sometimes

Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards

False gods, I scuff

At pettiness which plays so rough

Walk upside-down inside handcuffs

Kick my legs to crash it off

Say okay, I have had enough

What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen

They'd probably put my head in a guillotine

But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

Bob Dylan-It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

another one from Dylan I love:

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll

With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger

At a Baltimore hotel society gath'rin'.

And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him

As they rode him in custody down to the station

And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder.

But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,

Take the rag away from your face.

Now ain't the time for your tears.

William Zanzinger, who at twenty-four years

Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres

With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him

And high office relations in the politics of Maryland,

Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders

And swear words and sneering, and his tongue it was snarling,

In a matter of minutes on bail was out walking.

But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,

Take the rag away from your face.

Now ain't the time for your tears.

Hattie Carroll was a maid of the kitchen.

She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children

Who carried the dishes and took out the garbage

And never sat once at the head of the table

And didn't even talk to the people at the table

Who just cleaned up all the food from the table

And emptied the ashtrays on a whole other level,

Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane

That sailed through the air and came down through the room,

Doomed and determined to destroy all the gentle.

And she never done nothing to William Zanzinger.

But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,

Take the rag away from your face.

Now ain't the time for your tears.

In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel

To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level

And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded

And that even the nobles get properly handled

Once that the cops have chased after and caught 'em

And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom,

Stared at the person who killed for no reason

Who just happened to be feelin' that way without warnin'.

And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished,

And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance,

William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence.

Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,

Bury the rag deep in your face

For now's the time for your tears.

And to get off the Dylan kick, another band that I've been obssessed with lately:

TIME TAKES ITS CRAZY TOLL

AND HOW DOES YR MIRROR GROW

YOU BETTER WATCH YRSELF WHEN YOU JUMP INTO IT

CUZ THE MIRROR'S GONNA STEAL YR SOUL

I WONDER HOW IT CAME TO BE MY FRIEND

THAT SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU HAS COME AGAIN

YOU'LL NEVER NEVER KNOW HOW CLOSE YOU CAME

UNTIL YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE DIAMOND RAIN

THROW ALL HIS TRASH AWAY

LOOK OUT HE'S HERE TO STAY

YR MIRROR'S GONNA CRACK WHEN HE BREAKS INTO IT

AND YOU'LL NEVER NEVER BE THE SAME

LOOK INTO HIS EYES AND YOU CAN SEE

WHY ALL THE LITTLE KIDS ARE DRESSED IN DREAMS

I WONDER HOW HE'S GONNA MAKE IT BACK

WHEN HE SEES THAT YOU JUST KNOW IT'S MAKE-BELIEVE

BLOOD CRYSTALIZED TO SAND

AND NOW I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND

YOU REFLECT INTO HIS LOOKING-GLASS SOUL

AND NOW THE MIRROR IS YR ONLY FRIEND

LOOK INTO HIS EYES AND YOU WILL SEE

THAT MEN ARE NOT ALONE ON THE DIAMOND SEA

SAIL INTO THE HEART OF A LONELY STORM

AND TELL HER THAT YOU'LL LOVE HER ETERNALLY

TIME TAKES ITS CRAZY TOLL

MIRROR FALLING OFF THE WALL

YOU BETTER LOOK OUT FOR THE LOOKING-GLASS GIRL

CUZ SHE'S GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A FALL

LOOK INTO HIS EYES AND YOU SHALL SEE

WHY EVERYTHING IS QUIET AND NOTHING'S FREE

I WONDER HOW HE'S GONNA MAKE HER SMILE

WHEN LOVE IS RUNNING WILD ON THE DIAMOND SEA

The Diamond Sea, lyrics by Thurston Moore, performed by Sonic Youth
