Nothing at all wrong with Academy ratio, and it's still used quite often in the art films, documentaries, dogme-95 films, etc. Jan Svankmajer, the Bros. Quay, Lars von Trier, Frederick Wiseman, D.A. Pennebaker, Guy Maddin, Harmony Korine, Thomas Vinterberg, Elias Merhige - even those kids who made the Blair Witch Project - all use this ratio to great effect.
The only people who think Academy ratio is dead are those who never venture beyond the mainstream offerings.
And there are tons of theaters that are equipped to project them properly. In Boston alone, there's the Brattle, Coolidge Corner, Kenmore Landmark Cinemas, the Museum of Fine Arts - all show Academy ratio films in their proper ratios. I'm sure the major theater chains are able to, as well, they just rarely screen non-mainstream films.
