I'm in the market for some speakers. I listened to Mirage Omni's, DefTech 2006, Paradigm Monitor, Polk and Infinity and I hate all the centers except the 2006's.

It's like it's too clear and too loud. It irritates me. I like the DefTech's because the center is more subtle and not as harsh. Am I completely bonkers???

Of course, I can't afford the 2006's so I'm really frustrated. I only have about 1,600 to spend for the fronts, center, rears and sub.

Anyone else feel this way? Is there a center for me in the world?

Sound like a possible setup problem. If the crossover to the sub is set wrong it might make all these sound to tinny. Also could you use whatever speaker you choose for your mains?

Try one of the Onix Rocket centers. They are highly regarded for their performance and looks. AV123

There's nothing wrong with you, you just haven't heard what you like....since you've only listened to 5 companies out of 2731937219837219832179381732197 other companies out there. [IMG]

Jason's advice is the best - don't use a "traditional" center if you don't have to!

I was thinking of the DefTech 2006's or the Klipsch RF-35's for my mains.

Perhaps nOrh's 4.0 ceramic setup ($850 shipped for all five speakers) and the rest ($750) on a good sub (an SVS CS+ and decent amp or a b-stock 25-31PC Plus)?

Of course, my preference would be the nOrhs ($850):

    http://www.norh.com/products/norh4/index.html

And a new 25-31PC Plus (about $825 shipped?):

    http://www.svsubwoofers.com/subs_pcplus_25-31.htm

Stretches your budget by about $75-$100, but that's when the 25-31CS Plus and a decent amp or a B-stock/used 25-31PC+ come into play if $1,600 is a hard and fast budget.

So, if you can stand the looks and can deal with placement issues (they're bigger than they look and pretty deep), these could be the speakers you're looking for. I just got some used marble 4.0s for my front three speakers, and the sound has been very impressive. I heard stuff in The Matrix that I had never heard before. There was a good review at CheapHomeTheater (http://www.cheaphometheater.com/) on the nOrhs. They were especially impressed with the 4.0s when it came to center channel duty. Of course, the looks put off a lot of people. Just something to think about.
