I was just wondering if I have a bum disc or if this is just the worst layer change in the history of DVD.

There is a point about 20 minutes or so before the end of the film where one scene is ending and another beginning. At this point, my player freezes for a fraction of a second and I get the effect of flickering back and forth between the 2 images. It seemed like a layer change, but I've never seen one done so poorly.

Is it just my disc or what?

Rain, if you can tell me what the scenes are in question I can quickly have a look at my disc. By the way, mine came without any insert card, is there supposed to be one?

Mine has an inlay card (two-page foldout) with chapter listing and what usually passes for 'production notes'.

I can't say I have ever noticed the layer change, so yours sound strange to me (but I have only seen this movie twice so far)...

I don't think there is any way you could have seen it twice and not noticed the phenomenon I'm encountering. Sounds like I got a bum disc. I'll do an exchange and see what happens.

The layer change in Nurse Betty is at the beginning of chapter 27. It begins with a shot of the boot of a Buick (just before Chris Rock opens it to reveal the cardboard cut-out).
Plays fine on my Sony player.

I have seen layer changes like that. The one on 12 Monkeys actually does a brief back-and-forth between two separate frames. It's not too bad, though.

Yup, that's the spot for sure. Mine flickers at that point. May be a hardware issue. I'm going to exchange it anyway just in case.

Actually the worse I have ever seen is Stir of Echoes. I have seen it on 3 DVD Players and I get the same thing. It flickers the way Rain seems to describe his DVD. Pretty bad. And it's not my copy since I had first rented it and got the same thing at the same spot.

For the benefit of those who may experience the same problem as I did, I thought I'd come back to confirm that it looks like a hardware problem (Toshiba, of course [IMG] ). I exchanged the disc, but it does exactly the same thing. [IMG]
Damn, I've got to upgrade my hardware.

The Nurse Betty layer change was one of the slowest, crappest layer changes on any of the DVDs I've owned - there was a second or two pause slap bang in the middle of the scene with the boot.

Personally, I think it is poor disc engineering, as much as hardware because most layer changes are pretty seamless on my LG lasting only a fraction of a second (Zenith by any other name - please don't laugh).

    That's interesting.

It's not slow on my player, it just flickers.

The DVD with the slowest layer change on my player is The Bridge on the River Kwai, which freezes up for approximately 12 seconds.

I'm certain that the copy I have is an RDSL disc. My player has an option to display where on the disc the head is, and it shows the head reaching the outer edge of the disc, and then switching layers, and then moving back towards the centre again.

If it was simply dual-layer, it would reach the outer edge, change layer, move right back to the centre, and then start moving towards the outer edge.

Maybe different pressings have been authored differently?

On my machine it's a clumsy change, especially as it interrupts a music cue, but relatively quick and smooth.

    It could be different pressings.
Do you own the Region 1 or Region 2 version? According to this page:

I own a R1 version, albeit one that was bought in Canada.
    The catalogue number is 96306 0180-2 WR02 #518
    The barcode is 6 96306 01802 5
I have a couple of dual-layer, non-RDSL discs (including one of the R2 Doctor Who discs, and these generally behave more erratically at the layer change.
