When I registered on this forum two years ago, I kept my ears and eyes open, and posted mainly questions. I gave an occasional answer about audio, since I was already familiar with it for quite some time.

It seems, though, that now people who have had membership here for days or weeks jump right in and become antagonistic in existing threads, or start ones that are deliberately annoying. I didn't start doing anything of the sort for at least 6-8 months! Someone recently posted a deliberately provocative and admittedly false thread in the After Hours section; he later said he did it to see the reaction he would get, then stated that Jack Briggs has a 'problem.'

I think these new members have a 'problem.' If you know everything, there's no need to be here.

Forums that are as respected as this one is tend to have people that join to raise our blood pressure.
Most of said people have some valuable input, they just can't word it well.
Mr Pink Panther is NOT included in this:)

You old fart the new wave is here ;)
Ok ok on a serious note I don’t know if the screen when you log in and choose a screen name has changed (its been a long time) but it was very evident to me what is and isn’t acceptable on this board. I have also noticed a little more harsh threads and especially replies to people & mods that were so inappropriate as to be removed.
On the upside the Mods have done a great job IMO nipping these instances in the butt. :emoji_thumbsup:

IIRC, it was always that way. I remember reading some threads back in '98 that were just the same (during the height of the wire wars!). I don't think much has changed.

I'm new here, too, since March. But I was a 'lurker' for some time before I decided to sign up. The members you speak of should just be ignored so they might go away.

Nathan,
I noticed your date of membership and can state with certainty that things started to go to hell in a handcart right after you joined. ;)

When I joined last August (yep, only about 3/4 of a year, though I lurked a long time myself prior to signing up), thing were much the same.
I almost got booted a couple-three times myself, because I just needed time (and appropriate spankings from the mods) to get used to how things work around here.
Some people never get used to it.
Others need never be given the opportunity to...they are so unpleasant so quickly that we frankly don't have the time or inclination to give them room for their growing pains.
I remember situations like this 15 or more years ago on CompuServe, and about 5-ish years later on Prodigy. And on BBS's the whole time during that pre-WWW era.
Bottom line is that I don't think it's different than it ever has been...it is just that we see more of it here on HTF, because we've gotten so popular lately. Ah, the pitfalls of success!
For more on this subject, and Ron's excellent commentary on the whole thing, see this thread.

In my time both as a member and a lurker, I've been dismayed over the increasingly bitter tones taken, not only during discussions but toward the Mods. Civility seems to be taking a back seat. Oh, for the good old days, when we were united against Divx.

Are we allowed to bring him up yet, Brent? IIRC, his name was never to be invoked again, lest we get an automatic 1 week suspension. Only 2 and a half years has gone by. I'm not sure that enough healing has been done.:D
So, I'm too afraid to say that man's name, which Pearl Jam has a song about a troubled boy by the same first name, and California has a city in the Mojave Desert, just north of Palmdale, like his last name. :b
Seriously, I think it's always been this way. I remember the "Wire Wars", and the "LD sound blows away crappy DVD" threads. Remember the TOP GUN thread, which supposedly "PROVED" LD's superiority?

Since late last year there has been an influx of teenagers joining the HTF and it has changed the tone of the HTF.
One moderator whom we shall call Jack Briggs is almost afraid to venture into the Movies Area nowadays, and can sometimes be seen in After Hours taking a breather and having a smoke (sorry Jack couldn't resist):D, all that Spidey/Star Wars frenzy was just too much for the guy, and I sympathise, I really do.;)

I feel that's an unfair comment.

There are a number of "teenage" members who contribute valuable input. In fact, there are probably several whom you don't even know are teenagers.

I've noticed inappropriate posts by people of many age groups.

This has nothing at all to do with age.

Sorry, Steve, but this hits a nerve with me. I'm not fond of singling out one particular demographic with respect to this issue.

There are at least two 16 year old members here whom I am personally quite fond of. I've never seen either one of them post anything questionable or inappropriate or disrupt the forum in any other way. Furthermore, I value their insight and opinions.

Quite frankly, I don't really understand this whole thread. Sure, there have been some new members who have been problematic but, as far as I can see, most have been dealt with by the Admin. staff as quickly and efficiently as possible.

EDIT: Make that three 16 year old members...I totally forgot about somebody. :b

I'm proof of that. I lurked for quite some time also. It wasn't until I actually started posting, and had a few threads closed or ignored:) , that I started to find how the system operates. At first , I was defensive but realized the overall purpose of moderation. I'm just now finding my own niche and place at the HTF. Being a "newbie" in/at anything is rough. You feel like an outsider, and tend to be a bit more sensative. Once a person drops the "persona" and acts as their true self, usually things tend to run smoother. I've learned that not only in life, but also here as a member of this community.
Bless

With our forum growing at nearly 50 new

members per day, we are always faced with

the prospect that a few of the signups are

going to be rotten apples that have no idea

about proper net ettiquette.

More than half the people that register to

this forum breeze right through the signup

guidelines despite the fact there are screens

making them WAIT....and then AGREE to what

is posted.

If they can't take the time to read the signup

guidelines, I certainly don't expect they even

took the time to read the rules here.

It's a simple case of people coming here, thinking

this board is like every other, and thus posting

in any style they think fits their needs.

We cannot prevent rude behavior on this forum.

We can only react when members report incidents

to us. Rest assured that when members do report

problems, we take steps in making sure that the

incident does not repeat itself.

Thanks
