What's this thing attached to my streetlight?

The city--at least, I hope it was the city [IMG]--attached a device to the streetlight today, and I'm wondering what it is. Best I can do is try to describe it:

A square plate has been affixed to the lightpole a little ways below the light, and a round pole comes off of this at a 45° angle before bending straight up to 90°. At the top of this pole is a square metal box that has a wire of some kind coming out the back that--as near as I can tell--attaches to the very top of the lightpole. There is a rather long, gray, probably flexible antenna coming out the top of this box. That's about all I can make of it at night.

I did a search just now and read something about contraptions being attached to lightpoles to enable some kind of internet access, but my area gets any kind of internet just fine. It doesn't look like a camera, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

I don't have a camera right now, but I'll see if I can borrow one tomorrow.

I'm betting it's something like this:

    http://www.hamradio-online.com/1996/jan/metricom.html

It looks a little different, mainly because the light pole is different. The light pole here has the light in a mushroom-shaped dome at the top of the pole. The plate holding the extra pole looks like this:

That's probably a pretty common bracket design, for many different uses.

I don't know, I think solar panels all look pretty much alike and I'd recognize it. When I first posted this, I didn't know about the antenna. I went out with a flashlight and saw it. It's some kind of receiver. Maybe one of my neighbors asked for it or will otherwise know.

That's the kind of thing I was afraid it might be. I think it's there to activate the implants they put in my head.

What's that old saying, "this thread is useless without pictures"? [IMG]

But seriously, if I had to guess, mobile phone cell? We even have them inside the office, although they're either small white plastic boxes mounted on brackets, or look a little like small upside-down dunes attached to the ceiling.

Until we know for sure what it is, perhaps you should wear a tinfoil hat near the object.

They're appearing on light poles in my area, too, except they're turtle-shaped.

Also, I've been blacking out lately, and I think I might be making soap during my blackouts.

    Coincidence? I think not.

Don't worry about the objects on the light pole.

In fact, you can forget all about them.

You never saw any objects on the light pole.

    You can't see them now.

There are no objects on the light pole.

    "What light pole?"

    Good.

Go back to sleep and in the morning everything will be fine.

These devices are part of an ad-hoc radio network for public safety communications operating on unlicensed bands, including 2.4 GHz.

I also found out that if you throw rocks at it, black helicopters suddenly appear! [IMG]

Good one, Brian. I think he'll buy that. We can go back to alert status alpha.

OMG! They got to Ted! They erased his message! [IMG]

Thanks, Brian. I'm glad it's something innocuous, as I've now seen them on many more lightpoles in the neighborhood. I'll still try to get a picture of it if I can.

Joe, I can't go back to Alert Status Alpha! I've already sent the goon squad to take him out!

Oh, man, this is the fourth time this year! I'm going to get SO written up for this!

Um, this is a secure channel, right, Joe?
