whats the point of knowing reference volume setting on your receiver when each movie is mastered at a different level. For example how many of you were able to watch LOTR at your receivers reference volume setting. I had to watch it at about -10 to -12 db below reference.

The only DVD that I have actually been able to play at my receiver's reference setting was Saving Private Ryan. It is my opinion that it may have been a little below reference however since I didn't have to turn it down at any time during the movie.

    Hi Yogi,

That's amazing! I had to watch LOTR at -10 to -12 also. Or was it -23 to -25? or +8 to +10? or was it 11:30 to 1:30? or was it one to two notches after the number 7? or was it ...?

If reference levels are mandated by THX then all THX certified software should be mastered at the same volume level and should play at reference levels when ever you play at your receivers calibrated reference setting, right?

Star Wars TPM was THX cert. but I and many others thought the mix was very low compared to most other DVD's. So I don't know if all THX cert. DVD's have the same level playback.
