Hi,

I'm finishing the basement of my house which includes a door that goes. . .nowhere right now. My intention is to dig out and build a dedicated home theater room off of the basement. It will have a concrete floor, walls, and lid. My question is, how big should I make the room? I have five kids, we all love to sit around and watch movies on Friday and Saturday nights. I really don't plan on any company--the room will be just for my family.

Thanks.

Make it large enough to fit enough furniture to sit everyone comfortably. Make sure you have adequate walkways around as well. There are numerous programs that will help you determine this. If software isn't your bag, then stores like Office Max and Office Depot have graph paper and furniture templates that so you can plan your layout by hand.

As with most construction projects, make sure to pull the appropriate permits. And since you mentioned "dig", consult a structural engineer. You really don't want to pull out dirt that is vital to the foundation of the rest of your house.
