The meaning of life? Easy. We exist solely for the benefit and enjoyment of the cats that own us. :D

The true ANSWER, to life, the universe and everything, has already been posted here, but for more information on the '42', please check out The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 'Trilogy'. Other mind blowing topics include how to fly (throw yourself at the ground and then get distracted right before you hit), how to stop a bypass from destroying your home (lying in front of a bulldozer) and how not to be afraid (buy some peril-sensitive glasses). Hope that helps!

The Meaning of Life according to The Life of Brian.:)
...If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle -- that's the thing!
And... always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
Come on!
Always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!
So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!
And always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
Always look on the bright side of life
(whistle)

Tonio K. presents two possibilities:

(A) you're an integral and valuable

part of some master plan, or

(B) clearly as important as a dirtclod

or that can

I could not answer a question like that without bringing religion into it. So I won't.

A part of that meaning (that I did not mention) is finding out who we are and where we fit into the scheme of things. We spend trillion of dollars trying to accomplish this task. I believe the entire space program is a piece of this puzzle by trying to find who else is out there, thus answering the question of who we are.

The meaning of my life is: To Learn.

When I expire, my spirit/soul/whatever will be the sum of everything I have learned through reading, through traveling and through my life's experiences.

Here's one for you Rush fans:

"My philosophy, in essense, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." --Ayn Rand

The meaning of life is to have fun. Seriously.

Which came first: Adams' 42 or the Illuminati's 23? And wasn't there something in Adams' books along the lines of "Please excuse the mess, sorry for the inconvenience?"

I think the meaning of life is to perpetuate your legacy. Have kids. Don't have 10 of 'em though, because chances are if the first nine didn't do it for you then the 10th won't either.

Seriously though, I think that biologically the meaning of life is to continue the species. I know, this is terribly philosophical, but many of our primal drives are still focused on the central theme of child-bearing and child-rearing. Everything else is secondary because no matter how great our technological innovations, if we fail to make new babies, it is all worth nothing.

Jason, my thoughts exactly. Ultimately, the meaning of life must be reproduction. Without reproduction there would be no life at all.

PS Nystrom, the Adams quote was God's Final Message to His Creation, written in 30-foot tall letters of fire in the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains, which read "We apologize for the inconvenience."

Actually "Life is empty and meaningless."

It is the individuals themselves that give meaning to their life using their minds.

No one will ever know for sure so just make something up.

As long as it hurts no one else.

PS: You could get some ideas by reading Sartre.
