Been thinking about grabbing Babylon 5 on Blu myself, Scott. I have fond memories of watching that show as it aired, especially enjoying the run from seasons two through four. Some of the acting and dialogue could be clunky at times (nearly all the best actors were playing the alien characters), and the fifth season is mostly a damp squib except for the final episode (for reasons I know you're aware of), but the overall main story arc is pretty damn great.
B5 S1 was like the first season of many shows: it's trying different things to get a handle on what's working and what isn't. The show really kicks into high gear with the 2-parter "A Voice in the Wilderness", which happens to coincide with virtually every episode going forward being written or co-written by Strazynski. Seriously. From that point on, there were 93 episodes (not counting the movies), and only 8 of them were not written/co-written by JMS. (As were all of the movies. And most of Crusade.)
And, yes, his dialog could definitely get clunky. Ivanova's "Death incarnate" speech, for example, was just total cringe. But JMS was a terrific storyteller.
Season 1 does work better in a series rewatch after you've seen the rest of the series, mostly because you can see the introduction of things that become important later on. Such as Catherine Sakai running into the First Ones in "Mind War" (ep 106). And ep109, "Deathwalker" is still one of the series' best.
And because of the uncertainty of B5's getting a fifth season, JMS had to crash cram all of the "A" plots into what was left of S4, leaving S5 to be primarily all of the "B" plots. On the other hand, S5 also had two episodes co-written by Harlan Ellison, and one solely written by Neil Gaiman.
I've been slowly working my way through the Blu-ray set. The hardest part of doing so are the feelings of sorrow that so many of the wonderful main cast have passed away.
