After puling my PS2 out of the box and looking at it I of course had to remove the plastic cover on the back to see what was there. Thinking there was something special behind there I was surprised to find...well, nothing. So someone tell me if sony is going to make me/us buy something else to make the PS2 better? What's the slot for?

That is where the Network Adapter will be going - and some rumors state that it will have an IDE connector for a hard drive. I've seen some pictures which support that rumor...

Also the Linux kit has hardware that goes there if memory serves me correctly.

The Hard Drive (HDD) goes inside the bay and the network adapter/modem covers it. The modem adds some meat to the back of the PS2 beyond just the hole, which is how they can fit a HDD and a modem in it.

The Linux kit comes with a HDD, which is what goes in the slot.
