There are lots of threads here that will give you a ton of information on both services. You should check out http://www.qtm.net/~trowbridge/DBScomp.htm for programming comparisons and http://www.dbsforums.com/compare/compare.html for equipment comparison.
I had DirecTV for over 5 years and just switched to Dish and couldn't be happier. The big differences seem to be:
DirecTV has more sports packages than Dish.
Dish has more HDTV programming than DirecTV, and their HDTV feeds are East Coast (HBO, SHO, PPV and demo) Others have noted, and I have also personally noticed that the picture quality seems to be a little better with Dish.
Also, if you're a first-time subscriber, you can get a hell of a deal on equipment and programming. Check out http://www.dishdepot.com for one, as they have some great equipment packages for new subscribers. The Dish 6000 receiver can receive HDTV satellite signals, as well as HDTV OTA signals with the optional 8VSB tuner. An all-in-one package, which I like.
Search this forums and others for more information. You'll find that everyone has a different opinion. Since I really don't watch that much sports, I have no regrets about switching to Dish. (I believe Dish's programming is also a little less expensive than DirecTV)
