I've seen a few really high end recievers that have these AMP IN inputs so that, if you wanted to, use them as amplifiers. Is it not true that a 6 channel or 8 channel input that you can find on almost any reciever (like the ones you plug DVD-A and SACD players into) would do the same thing? If so, then what is the point of these specialized AMP IN jacks (like the ones on the HK7000/8000)?

    Hello Jon,

To the best of my knowledge, the 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 direct channel INPUTS are used only to import signal from an external sound decoder. PRE-OUTS, AMP IN(s) etc., are amplification paths. Main In(s) allow the use of external devices such as equalizers, etc.
