It Depends

On What? Whether a likable cast and mostly goodhearted protagonists are enough to overcome a story that embraces some of the worst tendencies of modern superhero movies.

I tried watching The Boys around the time it first premiered and for whatever reason couldn't embrace the show. I suspect it was mostly due to the goriness of the series, and I don't think I completely understood (at the time) the tone the show would adopt. Fast forward to now and I've really gotten into the show. I have been slowly working through the seasons and am currently finishing up season three with one more season in the tank to be viewed.

It is sort of strange how we react to entertainment at times. Back in 2019 the show felt like a 'miss' and now I am enjoying it about as much as any series I've watched over the past few years, with Shogun being about the only series I've enjoyed more. So for the near future I'll continue to slowly work through the series and will probably be caught up in a few weeks.

After watching Jensen Ackles for so many years in Supernatural, it has been a lot of fun seeing his new character being introduced in season three of this program.

Part of my rewatch of Deadpool and Wolverine movies ahead of Friday's Deadpool & Wolverine.

No

Why Not? While it wasn't as bad as I remembered it being, it's still a prequel that feels completely unnecessary and gets Deadpool completely, catastrophically wrong.

Why? It's hard to overstate the importance of this movie, which basically created the template for the modern superhero film. And nearly a quarter of a century later, it still holds up.

Why? It's the rare sequel that surpasses the original, taking what worked about the first movie and building on it in intelligent and sophisticated ways.

Why? While X-Men Origins: Wolverine underwhelmed critics and fans, it was financially successful enough for Fox to attempt another standalone Wolverine movie. This time, they got it right, mining one of the more interesting parts of Logan's backstory while introducing a plot device that challenged him in new ways. If the final battle is a bit disappointing in the way it devolves into mindless action, it's not enough to derail the movie as a whole.

Why? Bryan Singer makes a triumphant return to the X-Men franchise in this adaptation of one of the most renowned storylines from the comics, tying together Matthew Vaughn's prequel cast from X-Men: First Class and Singer's own original cast from the first three films. And after sitting out First Class aside from one brief (and hilarious) cameo, Wolverine is again at the center of things here in a movie that is relentlessly entertaining while being entirely character-driven.

My thoughts (which may contain spoilers) are available here.

NOTE: This disc in particular has been a problem for me since day one. When it first came out, I needed a firmware update on my Blu-ray player at the time just to get it to play. Tonight, it slid out of the disc tray of my UB820 and got wedged inside. Yanked it out with pliers, rotated it, and hit play and it played perfectly -- until I tried to eject it at the end, at which point it got stuck again. Tried several other discs to see if it was an issue with the disc tray, but they all played (and ejected) fine, so I'm thinking the disc is either slightly too thick or slightly too thin for the UB820.

Why? While it doesn't pack the same gleefully shocking punch that it did when it was first released, Ryan Reynolds's Merc with a Mouth still makes for an amusing and endearing antihero, with a really great supporting cast of characters and a villain who is as dickish as he is evil.

Why? This gritty, poignant post-Western works as a melancholy epilogue for the Fox X-Men movies, or as a standalone character drama that just so happens to feature an aging superhero as its protagonist. Hugh Jackman has never been better in the title role.

It Depends

On What? Whether you like the title character -- or gruesome, gloriously over the top violence -- enough to enjoy a movie that feels overstuffed and trades in the charming subversiveness of the first move for smug (and at times obnoxious) self-satisfied smirking.

Why? The team-up that Deadpool at least has always dreamed of, this is a fun romp that serves as a fitting and fond farewell to the Marvel movies made by Fox.

I watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) with my son (he thought it was a bit slow but liked the ending).

Also watching a Mike Hammer double, Kiss Me Deadly (1955) followed by The Girl Hunters (1963), where our eponymous hero spars with lovely Shirley Eaton the year before she was immortalised in Goldfinger.
