The Train Robbers - I couldn't remember whether I had seen this so bought the blu ray. Obviously not top tier Wayne but still very enjoyable, great cast with Ann Margaret and Rod Taylor. Not sure why, but it reminded me a little of The Professionals. Very nice blu ray which I would upgrade to 4k if available. It's about time the Duke was better represented in UHD.

Today I watched He Ran All The Way, a pretty gripping suspense drama with a good cast featuring ace photography from James Wong Howe. The director, John Berry, did a very good job and it's a great shame he had his career damaged by the blacklist.

Star trek IV and V.
I regretted having purchased the 4k 6-movie box-set. Maybe I'll sell them, I am not sure. I think I should have purchased only I and II.

Last night I watched Big House, U.S.A. which I'd never seen before. It's an interesting film and a curious one too. It's essentially two separate stories blended together, one about a kidnapping and the other about a group of seriously evil criminals escaping from jail and then turning on each other. There are two scenes which I found both sinister and suspenseful

The main credit titles name one of the actors as Randy Farr, of whom I'd never previously heard. At the start of the movie there is a scene with a first aid nurse and I recognised her eyes immediately although I couldn't remember the name. A little later in another scene it came to me: Felicia Farr who in the mid-50s dallied with Glenn Ford in 3.10 To Yuma and sided with Richard Widmark in The Last Wagon. I had no idea she'd changed her working Christian name early in her career.

She was also married to Jack Lemmon for decades before his death.

. . . and I suspect that's why she was given a major supporting role opposite Jack Lemmon's friend Walter Matthau in Charlie Varrick.

Today I watched Tom Horn, a film which greatly impressed me when I first saw it. It still does. I think it's a really good movie. I'd like Warner Archive to go back to the original camera negative, do a new 4K scan and then release a Blu-ray disc.

Why? While it's not without its flaws, this sequel does a miraculous job handling the passing of the franchise's main star while passing the Black Panther mantle to a new character and expanding the world of the MCU.

My original thoughts from when I saw it in theaters (which may contain spoilers) are available here.

Some additional thoughts about tonight's viewing (which may contain spoilers) are available

Why? This taut, character-driven thriller isn't devoid of M. Night Shyamalan's shortcomings as a director, but they don't get in the way of the tightly-paced story, which features great performances and an engaging enough idea as the movie grapples with global implications in a startlingly intimate setting.

More of my thoughts (which may contain spoilers) are available here.

I came across a publicity photo for A Yank In The R.A.F. yesterday . . .

Yank 2.jpg

. . . so I watched the DVD last night. It's routine WW2 movie and Tyrone Power plays a pretty obnoxious character, but I enjoyed it anyway and it does have Betty Grable whom I like a lot.

Yesterday I found on YouTube a watchable presentation of a B feature thriller called Pier 23. I was pleased because it stars Ann Savage and Hugh Beaumont both of whom I'll gladly watch anytime but also because in a small supporting role it has Joi Lansing (billed as Joy Lansing) I have stills from her scene in my collection and I've always wondered from which production they came. Now I know!

I'm a huge fan of this trilogy, great story and terrific cast of young actors. I finished the Divergent trilogy today, Insurgent and Allegiant. The Maze films are better, although the philosophical aspects of the society in Divergent are interesting, reminded me of Logan's Run and Brave New World. Both trilogies dip in part two but have good concluding parts. Moving on to the Hunger Games, another film series I started but lost interest.

I watched 711 Ocean Drive yesterday. The Blu-ray disc is pretty good. The film's interesting but not especially original and we've seen many other films about organised crime. There are several familiar faces in the cast, some of whom were uncredited; for example, both Cleo Moore and Walter Sande.

Good film. Cast includes Dorothy Patrick who is a great favourite of mine, particularly like her in Follow Me Quietly and Violent Saturday.
