Today I watched No Mercy, a movie that could have been a lot better if the writer, the director and the editor had taken a bit more care. There is pretty good film to be made from the basic ingredients but No Mercy is just violent and moronic. What saves it are the strong performances from Richard Gere, whom I usually don't like, Kim Basinger and Jeroen Krabbe.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of this movie going back to its theatrical run. It should've been a much better movie.

I watched Chicago Confidential yesterday, a film I don't recall ever having seen before. It's nothing special but I found the film interesting and enjoyable and it benefitted from having a strong cast. I'll continue with the box-set today.

My thoughts on Chicago Confidential:

16) 11-08-22 "Chicago Confidential" (1957) (Blu-ray) 2.5/5 Stars
Another documentary style noir about a Illinois State Attorney investigating mob infiltration's in a union. This movie has it all, prostitution, murder, union corruption, white slavery and drugs. Brian Keith plays the crusading State Attorney with Dick Foran playing a union President wrongly convicted of murder due to a frame job by the crime syndicate that wants to take over his union. Not a good movie as I've seen a lot better with a similar storylines. With that said, this "B" movie did have some moments in which I was mildly entertained. An uncredited Jack Lambert, played with some gusto, a vicious mob hood. This Blu-ray was part of Kino's "Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema VII" box set.

Yes

Why? Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to his breakout hit District 9 isn't perfect; the literal class warfare between the haves in the heavens and the have nots down on Earth lands with the subtlety of a jackhammer. But Sony gave Blomkamp four times the budget he had for his debut picture, and every penny is on screen. The production design is phenomenal, and Elysium itself is beautifully conceived and executed. Matt Damon is a compelling protagonist operating under a dire ticking clock, and the evolution of his goals from purely selfish to something more idealistic tracks. There's enough here to recommend it, but a better script that made the evil of class disparities insidious instead of overt would have made a better end result.

I watched The Boss last night and was disappointed with both the film and the Blu-ray disc. Hal Mohr was one of the masters of light but this disc does not do justice to that. Compare the picture quality here with the Twilight Time disc of Underworld U.S.A. which really does display Mr. Mohr's skill.

I sampled the beginning of the commentary track and I'll finish that today.

Couldn't help myself. Just had to watch House Of Wax after Dial M For Murder. 35mm 3D faded print but still a great movie. The BD is almost perfect but I'd rather watch it on film.

I completed the box-set last night with The Fearmakers, a film I'd seen only once before, several decades ago when a repertory cinema ran a Jacques Tourneur season. (That same season gave me my first chance to see Stars In My Crown and Great Day In The Morning, two films I like a lot) I found The Fearmakers far more interesting this time and the central premise of the fraudulent mis-use of statistics to buttress an undeclared agenda seems to me still relevant today. As this forum is strictly apolitical, I won't cite examples.

I was also impressed by the writer's creation of the romantic no-hoper played by Mel Torme, several of whose albums are in my collection.

I'm grateful to Kino-Lorber for including this film in the set.

First Man (2018) - I started watching this on a flight last Summer but quickly decided it needed a bigger screen. I enjoyed it, particularly the technical aspects. Not too sure about Ryan Gosling's performance as often I was thinking he's just reading off his script. However, Claire Foy gave a wonderful performance as his wife. Bit of an abrupt ending though.

This would make a good double feature with Todd Miller's Apollo 11 documentary. With the passage of time, the Apollo programme seems even more audacious.

I watched two films last night which is unusual for me. The first was Storm Fear on a Kino Blu-ray disc with good picture quality but no sub-titles. I enjoyed the movie which has a similar story arc to Day Of The Outlaw. Cornel Wilde who co-starred directed the film and got good performances from the cast of seven. Jean Wallace was a much stronger presence than usual and it was good to see Dan Duryea playing a role so very different from those in the films he made with James Stewart. I didn't even recognise Lee Grant!

I then watched Parrish, a romantic drama written, produced and directed by Delmer Daves. Does that make him the "auteur" of this film? I intended only to check the aspect ratio of the DVD - 1:1.75 by the way - but I got caught up in the story and watched the whole film.

The feature film continuation of the MTV dramatic series adaptation of the 1985 Michael J. Fox feature film comedy.

It Depends

On What? Whether you watched the TV series or not. This leans heavily into the show's complex mythology and lengthy character arcs. While there is enough exposition for newcomers to follow the plot, they won't have the emotional investment in the many, many returning characters that fans of the show will have watching it.

That being said, as a huge fan of the show, I really enjoyed it. The show's creator/showrunner wrote the movie, and the show's producing director directed it, so they had the A-Team talent behind the camera. And the characters are so well-defined that the returning actors slip them back on like a favorite pair of gloves. To top it off, they brought back the show's best villain.

It made for a far more satisfying conclusion to the story than the actual series finale did, so I'm grateful it exists. And I wouldn't mind revisiting this work again in the future at some point.

The only downside is that they didn't get Dylan O'Brien back as Stiles, arguably the show's best character.
