I took advantage of Walmart selling the 2 movie set of the early 1990s Addams family movies for $12.99, and bought the set the last time we were stateside. We decided to watch one last night and tonight.

I found they are still hilarious and hold up really well. The two leads are actually better than the TV versions. It’s really tragic that the 3rd movie was never made theatrically as originally planed due to Raul Julia’s untimely death.

This set replaced my DVD, which had both movies on one disc. The new Blu ray set still has absolutely no extras.

Finally hooked up my used amp I purchased and ran Audyssy then did some fine tuning. Watching John Wick 3 and listening to the audio the amplifier added a spaciousness and extra transparency along with extra punch and dynamics. Even though the internal amplification on the Marantz is very good the Emotiva just helped the Marantz get to the next level. Rewatched Sinister and also watched Saw IV adding to the scary movie challenge.

    John Wick 3: Parabellum
    4K UHD Blu-ray
    Dolby Atmos 7.1.4

    John Wick 3 (2).

    Sinister

    Saw IV

Archipelago (Criterion Channel) 2010. Joanna Hogg's second feature, also starring Tom Hiddleston. An acquired taste. An upper class family vacations and shows fractures and frictions; an archipelago indeed, as individuals are tenuously connected by blood. No man is an island?

While I was waiting for my Sunday evening programs to begin, I did some YouTube surfing and landed on some documentaries I've always enjoyed so I rewatched them: The Cinemascope Story and the documentary on the making and restoration of Touch of Evil.

Seeing these two documentaries made me want to revisit The Robe and Touch of Evil. I may do just that in the coming week, though I have plenty of unwrapped Blu-rays and UHDs waiting to be watched for the first time.

We took a break from the October movie challenge to watch "Designing Woman" from 1957 on a Blu-ray I picked up in one of those Warner 4 for $44 sales. I don't remember ever seeing this one before. It's a delightful, witty and stylish romantic comedy. It doesn't take any big chances, but with the star power provided by Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck it doesn't need to.

We didn't entirely skip our October themed viewing, though. We did get to a community theater production of "The Addams Family Musical."

Sobibor (Amazon Prime) 2018. Russia's entry to the Oscars (didn't get the nomination). Slow boil account of the events leading to the revolt and escape from the death camp at Sobibor. What strikes me is how the German survivors who perpetrated all these crimes could be so easily reintegrated into German (or American or South American) society and be expected to hold different beliefs and be "good" people. I suppose if one has no conscience and no moral compass then one can be "good" people and beget "good" people for generations to come.

Hello Dave, Ride with the Devil is an excellent film. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 1999. As soon as it was released on Blu ray I picked up a copy. It had rave reviews I highly recommend it. You can read Matt Hough's review.

Hey! Many thanks. I didn't know about The Cinemascope Story, still less that it was available on YouTube. I watched it today and it led me to another video about aspect ratios. (I'm very pleased that WiFi enables me to watch these via my projector)

Lengthy phone calls on both Sunday and Monday have put me way behind on watching nightly TV (I didn't see ANYTHING last night leaving me with a backlog of five programs to watch today before TONIGHT's primetime begins).

    I know, first world problems.

Is Paris Burning? (Amazon Prime) 1966. Roadshow version: Overture, intermission, entr'acte music. Not a bad film, somewhat undone by some stunt casting, but mostly by dubbing all dialogue into English. It would have been much better to have the original languages spoken and translated into English subtitles. There's tension between the disparate factions of the Resistance trying to establish dominance while fighting to liberate the city. There's suspense whether the Allies will march into Paris, a step that was initially in doubt; there's suspense whether general von Choltitz will carry out mad Hitler's orders to destroy Paris. So this is not the greatest epic, but far from the worse.
Sweetheart of the Campus (TCM app) 1941. Directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Ozzie and Harriet and Ruby Keeler. Inconsequential musical from Columbia nicely shot by Franz Planer, a recent refugee from Hitler's Reich.

Another first time viewing for my matinee today:

Quite a nice little film. I couldn't believe how young Frances McDormand looked.

A couple times I even got something of a ScarJo vibe from her during the film.
