Peg and I finished our semi-binge of The Good Fight: Season 2

And our double feature for the night also included...

....wait for it...

I thought the second season of The Good Fight was superior to the very good first season.

Because I was working on a review item over the past two days, I didn't have much time for leisure viewing. Now I have some TV to catch up with as well as last night's Noir Alley, and then I'll likely stream something from the TCM app. I was too busy to comb through what they were showing over the past two days, so I'll see if anything interesting pops up.

I thought the second season of The Good Fight was superior to the very good first season.

I was putting a fair amount of thought into that idea earlier today.

First, I concluded that the show is a definite step down from The Good Wife. To me, it seemed like there was so much more diversity of storylines in TGW. One of the things that is obvious about the TGF is how so much of the show is Anti-Trump-centric. I get that the show is based in Chicago and that the majority of people there are going to be anti-Trump but, in my opinion (thank you Ana Gasteyer!!), they really narrowed the possibilities for the show with nearly every single plotline somehow related to the Trump presidency.

And, frankly, I was a little disappointed with the season finale. all the storylines split up the cast into separate places (Julian and Adrian with the Kill the Lawyers Task Force, Diane and Liz dealing with her potential indictment, Marissa and Maya reduced to bumbling lackeys for Lucca's delivery) and the writers didn't seem to pull everything together neatly like I have grown to expect from the Kings. No cliff hanger and I'm left with no definite ideas about where the show is going to head now.

But that;s just all "in my opinion." :D

Yesterday I was in the mood for some full-blooded romantic melodrama, so I watched Beloved Infidel. This film got slaughtered by the critics when it first came out but I enjoy it enormously. Very unusually, Philip Ober plays a sympathetic role! The Twilight Blu-ray disc - now available in their sales at a knockdown price - is excellent.

Today I'll be watching Decoy, a Monogram movie!

Meh. Peg and I both thought it was...okay. But that we should have liked it more. She was especially interested in learning something about Dicken's writing process. Both of us came away thinking it was rather "paint by numbers"--meaning that you just plug in all these well-known bits from A Christmas Carol into Dickens' personal life or observations. Nothing really all that interesting or groundbreaking. And the idea that he had to write/complete the story in such a small amount of time wasn't enough to carry the day.

Christopher Plummer brings gravitas to anything he's in these days.

Well Mike, Dickens was going through severe writer's block when he wrote A Christmas Carol so perhaps his writing process was not the same for other pieces of his work.

I hadn't planned on it, but I ended up streaming The Big Country on Amazon Prime this afternoon. Looked like the first Blu-ray transfer with a goodly amount of flicker and (some) slight stretch (though I admit I wasn't as astute as others in seeing it in the first Blu-ray).

I watched Untamed Youth last night. The film is never taken seriously but should be by anyone interested in genre cinema and how it evolves. Untamed Youth is the bridge between classical prison films like Brute Force and soft porn, latter-day variants starring actresses like Pam Grier and Phyllis Davis.

Untamed Youth also updates musical tropes by using them within a rock 'n roll format. (The last musical number reminded me of Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda!)

The Warner Archive DVD-R has good picture and sound quality.

Yesterday I watched Highway Dragnet which starred three actors I like: Richard Conte, Joan Bennett and Wanda Hendrix. The film is weakened by relying on a totally implausible coincidence, and the ending could have been done a lot better. Reed Hadley - the man with the voice-overs - played the policeman in pursuit.

Tomorrow, in addition to Noir Alley which I'll watch at lunchtime, I'll be watching The Equalizer, Denzel's first foray into a franchise.

Peg and I have been busy the last few nights.

We had our first ever viewing of:

And then during a marathon gift wrapping session we spun up both:
