as far as $ is concerned. Would a single full range speaker be better than a 2 or 3 way surround that is lower quality? Hypotheticaly, say each speaker costs $400.

$400 for a full range speaker? If you pay that much for a single driver full range it better be DAMN GOOD! I'd have to say that even a lower quality 2way will be better because a single driver is not as efficent at reproducing both mid and high frequencies as a separte mid and tweeter will be.
