A friend wanted me to post this:

    What she is looking for:

42" Plasma TV (required because of space)
    Receiver (Prefers Sony? DB??)
    Progressive DVD 5 changer(with DVD-A or SACD ?)
Small wall mount speakers (5.1 system)
    Subwoofer

    She would like to spend:
$5,000 or less for the equipment (cables extra)

She doesn't play things loud, but likes full range quality sound. She doesn't have much space for speakers in the room, and for proper placement of the front left speaker it will need to be wall mounted higher then optimal for sonic quality. **Edited** She's going with EDTV.

Westly, the Basics area is reserved for general discussion at the beginner level (home-theater definitions, concepts, and essentials) -- not specific product advice and recommendations. Since your friend is looking for an entire system, I've moved your post to A/V Sources (which occasionally serves as a stop-gap area for people seeking advice on entire systems).

These are all best prices, meaning after sales, deals, demo, or used
    Plasma - Gateway (~$2.2k)
Mid Level Receiver - sony, marantz, denon, nad, hk, onkyo - ~$500
    DVD Player
    5 Disc (DVD-A) Panasonic CP72 ~$250 (SACD) Sony NC555ES ~$500
    Speakers - Rockets (1pr 250, 1pr 150, rsc200) ~$1600 Polk (1pr LSi9, 1pr LSi7, LsiC) ~$1400
    Subwoofer - Hsu VTF-2 (~$400) SVS 20-39 PCi (~$500)

    Total - $4750-5300

    Just a suggestion

Well you're pretty much looking at about $3k of your budget being the display, and that's for ED (480p) that'll accept high-def signals but convert them back to 480p. True HD sets would pretty much eat your whole budget and more.

So that leaves around $2k for the rest. If you must have Sony I would look at the ES line. The new ES1000 is a great receiver with alot of power and features. The ES2000 and up uses digital amplification and also seems to be some great products. I would look at wallmount speakers from Deftech, Paradigm, and B&W. The Paradigm Monitor 5-OWs wouls make great mains, as well as Mini-Monitor-OWs for surrounds. For the sub I would look at SVS and pre-built offerings from Adire and Stryke Audio. If you can still find a Panasonic CP-72 that would be your best bet on the DVD-V/A player.

I agree, if you want true HD plasma, your entire budget will have to be put towards that.

Is this a good setup in the 5K range:

    Panasonic TH-37PA20U (37" Plasma TV {required because of space} $3K)
    STR-DA2000ES (Receiver $535)
    DVPNC555ES (Progressive DVD 5 changer $450 ?)
Energy Take 5.2 (Small wall mount speakers ~$500)
    HSU VTF-2 (Subwoofer $449)
    = $4934

The speakers have to be small. "Bose" is a four letter word! Any other speakers we should consider over the Energy Take 5.2?
