Based on the 2014 Taika Waititi film of the same name, Waititi actually returns to direct the pilot, and he and movie co-writer/star Jemaine Clement are the showrunners for this new small-screen version.
There are some really solid, hysterical laughs in the first episode. Matt Berry plays Matt Berry as a vampire, and it's totally delightful ("I think the main purpose of the Baron's visit is to see if we as vampires have conquered America. But as you can see, the place is fucking massive..."). Mark Proksch's character is also really funny, and in many ways it's like his Better Call Saul-persona simply got transplanted to a vampire-den on Long Island, but it's great, especially his "true" nature.
And I'm just stoked Doug Jones is getting more opportunities these days to act beyond body-performance, and in comedy. His reaction to the camera crew was absolutely fantastic. And for some reason, the "creepy paper" bit really got to me.
I laughed hard quite a bit during this, so I'm going to keep watching it. It has the same vibe of the movie, but since it has different characters, I think it will easily become its own thing, here.
