I have heard "Up With People" as pop culture reference a couple of times. I decided to do a Google search on it.

I didn't get a lot back, and what I did get was very confusing.

Was it just a singing group, or was it a spiritual/cultural/policital movement?

Did they have any hit songs? Would you see them on TV?

Did they have a set group of members? Would they come in and out like Menudo?

Were they out to change the world or something? Did the 60's/70's Idealism get trampled by 80's Greed?

What timeframe are we talking about here?

Were they like a "straight" Village People?

    Discuss.

I saw them when I was a young kid in the late seventies along with a lot of other kids at that time. I hadn't thought of them in decades and now I have their theme song running through my head. I hate you now. Damn you. Damn you to hell. [IMG]

If memories serves it was a musical review that travelled around the US preaching good will and other such idealism. I've blocked most of it out of my head but seem to remember that they wore really colorful polyester jump suits that could have only been created in the 70's.

They sang at my high school in the early 70's:b They did a kind of "Ain't it great to be an American with a chance for a better future" program arranged with "...that hip beat that today's teens just can't get enough of". Pretty hokey stuff with costumes that were rejected by Disneyland monorail drivers.

    Sing along with Steve!

    Up, up with people,
you meet 'em wherever you go.
    Up, up with people,
the best kind of folk you'll know

If more people were for people,
    all people everywhere
There'd be a lot less people to worry about
And a lot more people who care.

(I saw them in concert twice in the early 70's.)

About eight years ago they made a trip through Boise. My daughter was 16 at the time and volunteered us to host two boys. One boy was from the Denver area, and the other from France. Much as I wanted I resisted calling him Baldar. Anyway, I think they had to PAY $10,000 to join the tour.

My pastor met his wife when she made a visit here about 25 years ago. She was from Ireland and looked forward to seeing the world, or at least the USA.

I remember in 1969 while in basic training in the Air Force, we were shown a movie of UP WITH PEOPLE.

lol, my buddies friend was in the last "cast" of up with people.
They did have to pay a ridiculous amount to be on the tour (~$10,000US) and had taken their show international. not so much a pro-american as a pro-humanity message.

ROFL when I was in college in the mid 90's they came and pitched that stuff pretty hard. I think the poster that said they had to pay something like 10g's to join was right. Actually, IIRC there was a kid on our dorm floor that was a retired up with people performer.

Jim, the 'Coke' commercial was done by the Seekers, and is on the end of their 'Collector Series' album.

Right you are Glenn, well, actually it was The New Seekers.
I was confused because it was not a quartet in the commercial, it was a meadow full of people.

Yeah, they were still coming around to schools (elmemntary on up) in the late 80's early 90's. I had the, uh, pleasure of seeing them twice. I was always under the impression they were like a MLM msuic ansemble or something. Kinda freaked me out!

Dear god, I rue no forgiveness on ALL of you! I had tried to blank out some memories from my life, and now, not only did you bring back memories of "Up With People" I catch a report on Sirius this morning regarding EST.

It's all a conspiracy! I thought all this crap was supposed to be in the collective pile of stuff we all agreed to forget.

Really, outside of the time when the entire US joined together to reject the metric system, has there ever been a more unifying American moment then when we all decided, somewhere around the time of "Cookie Monster Disco" or "Disco Duck" that we would never talk about this stuff again?

Glenn Close was a member of "Up With People" at one point...

Good thing she got out of that racket.

    Sincerely,

    John Kilduff...

Only familiar with "Up With People" through a reference on an episode of "Animaniacs!".

"Viva la Gente"? yeah, we had that trainwreck here too. And yes, I now have the theme song running through my head... In SPANISH. It's like, twice as stupid when you translate it.
