I noticed on the Easter egg hate thread that there's an EE to that effect on Cast Away. I didn't know that when I rented it, so now I'm curious, but I don't want to spend the money just to rent it again and find out (I didn't think the film was worth buying).
If you don't want to reveal it online, please send me an email. Thanks!

this is known as a "mcguffin". it doesn't really matter what is inside...it's just a device used to advance the plot.
it's just inconceivable that he wouldn't open it...i mean...really...what if it was something he could have used. gimme a break...
personally, i think it was the same thing that in the trunk of the car from 'repo man'.

The phone is what is was....at least accoriding to Zemeckis.
But it doesnt matter.
Now as for the cse in Pulp Fiction, no one knows, not even Quentin Tarintino. He NEVER said what was in it, and in an interview clarified that he doesnt know what is in it, or never said.
Personally...I think it was Elvis's Gold Suit. What else would cause men to stare in awe, emit the golden glow..

ooohhhh.Good one, didnt think about the Malkovich connection. Damn, if Chuck opened the Fec EX box and went into Malkovich, he could have been back to the USA in 15 minutes...he would just have to find a pay phone to call home after he was spit out on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike!

I say Quentin Tarantino's full of crap. The way he directed the film made what was in the case fairly obvious; shots directly behind Ving Rhames, focusing on the band-aid on the back of his neck where his soul was taken out, the awe of the characters who see the soul and their vague comments about it. I'm sure it's nothing mundane.

Ahhh...someone who knows his film theories :) A lesser known varient called the "mcnugget" is where characters eat barely edible processed food in mass quantities. It sometimes matters, but as far as I remember, does not involve advancing the plot any.

Not to go too far off topic, but if the pulp fiction case had ving's soul, why did the kids have it?

Just to throw in a theory on what was really in the FedEx package, if I remember the movie correctly it contained the woman's divorce papers. She sent them to her husband in Moscow for him to sign, and they were being returned to her when the plane crashed.
That or the cell phone thing.
