My friend at work is having problems with
pop-up ads saying his Windows has found a
critical error and then pushes for a fix product.

He gets these ads continually ever few seconds
    after he closes them.

I distinctly remember having this problem a
few years back and the fix involved going into
Windows messenger or Control Panel and turning
off a function that allowed such banners.

Can anyone tell me the procedure?

    Thanks

Type in services.msc at the run prompt and disable messenger service.

Does your friend do windows update often? I know on a recent reinstall I had this same problem before the patches loaded and afterwards it disappeared.

Sounds like a typical pop-up ad caused from adware. Does he have Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Antispyware, and Adware Personal SE, all installed? These are pretty much 3 must have free programs that will eliminate the ads. Plus SP2 has the pop-up blocker that works well.
