I gave up hope probably 5 years ago. I think it would take a change in leadership or Steam would have to start to decline under current management before Valve will even consider it. Right now, there's more money that's easier to earn by being a digital content distributor than there is in creating a major AAA sequel for one of gaming's most beloved franchises. And the chances only seem to be decreasing. Each passing year, the hurdle that Valve must jump to succeed with a sequel only gets raised higher. Hard to imagine their chances at meeting expectations or ideally, surpassing them like they did with Half-Life 2, even being doable at this point. We've built it up in our minds to such a degree that I just don't think they have it in them to even come close.
