Half Life 3 will beat them all for longest-to-release! (Uncertain whether to laugh or cry...)

I gave up hope probably 5 years ago.

I think it would take a change in leadership or Steam would have to start to decline under current management before Valve will even consider it. Right now, there's more money that's easier to earn by being a digital content distributor than there is in creating a major AAA sequel for one of gaming's most beloved franchises.

And the chances only seem to be decreasing. Each passing year, the hurdle that Valve must jump to succeed with a sequel only gets raised higher. Hard to imagine their chances at meeting expectations or ideally, surpassing them like they did with Half-Life 2, even being doable at this point.

We've built it up in our minds to such a degree that I just don't think they have it in them to even come close.

Last of Us is generally the best game I've ever played on any platform, period. And that says a lot considering how much I love Nintendo efforts.. like Zelda, Mario, etc. But the storytelling here is compelling, and you can play as pretty much a good guy should you want.

But if that isn't your cup of tea:

Launch title "Infamous: Second Son" can be found everywhere super cheap. It's solid fun.
Horizon: Zero Dawn is maybe the breakout game on either platform I've played in this generation. Beautiful to look at, great storyline, lots of fun. It is "long" though in the sense it's a bit RPG esque
My kids like Nier, which is OK and they finished it in one straight through sitting I think, so not super long, though there are many ways to play.
If you can deal with a side scroller, another game you can now buy on the cheap which more people should have played: Valiant Hearts. Great story, great fun.

I keep trying to get into Witcher III and giving up. I enjoyed Dragon Age: Inquisition, Fallout4 and H:ZD a lot; but something about Witcher I just don't care for I guess

Right now my pick is Horizon:Zero Dawn. However, be prepared for a lot hours on the game. There is a lot of content if a person wants to do every main, side and errand quest.

The game world is really beautiful visually and it feels huge. Most games, lately, have not been worth the 80+ dollars I have dropped on them, but HZD was worth every dime.

I have played The Last of Us :) My comments are in the respective thread.

Horizon: Zero Dawn will probably put to paid my wishlist of older games and be what I buy next.

But, due to various life choices, my 2017 gaming plans have been postponed. I haven't turned on the PS4 in four months (except to watch a blu-ray). My Fallout 4 game is impatiently waiting. And I have Journey, bought last Summer, tapping its toes and glancing overtly at its watch.

(I blame this partly on Star Wars Armada, which can consume what would otherwise be a perfectly good videogame day.)

There is no better excuse for not playing video games than playing tabletop games.

(Well, maybe not NO better excuse. . .but we like to keep this forum PG-rated!)
