In 1987 Robocop would show something like a DVD disc in use. It was a CD-size disc popped into an entertaiment center-type unit which resulted in a video message coming up on the TV screen.
This was 10 years before DVD arrived in stores, but with laserdisc already available and CD's by then long in use, it was easy to extrapolate that the two technologies would somehow combine in the future.
Here's the scene, explained generally as it's from memory at 5:30AM:
Spoiler:A guy is partying w/2 hooker-types and w/drugs when a couple guys bust in and chase off the girls and then beat up and wound the guy. Then they pop in the DVD-type disc, which is a pre-recorded message from their boss (the dude who runs the company that "owns" the police dept. in the film's plot) as to why he sent the boys to rough him up and aren't-you-sorry-you-screwed-with-me. Then the boys leave the guy there, unable to get away while they activate a bomb to finish him off and destroy all the evidence.

The movie is actually centered around a DVD player.
If I remember right Spoiler:Somebody gets wacked over the head with a DVD player

There was a mention of DVD in Rush Hour 2:
Spoiler: After Chris Tucker breaks the triad leaders laptop
and he orders his gang to get him, he says to him that he can buy him a new laptop, with a DVD player.

The 'geek' girl in "Sugar and Spice" watched a DVD of "Heat" on a computer when they're all watching crime movies for inspiration.
I've heard "Airport 77" has an early laserdisc player in it; just got this on DVD but haven't watched it yet. "Bustin' Loose" has a scene in a stereo store with a rack of MCA DiscoVision laserdiscs in the background.

Not a film I know, but the first series of The Sopranos had DVD players (and DVDs) as key plot accessories!

Alex, you're right about Sopranos. Season 1, I think it was episode 2 had the nephew of Tony Soprano and his junkie friend hijack a truck of DVD players, and then you saw various mob members (including Tony) take "samples" for themselves. Turned out this truck was under protection of Tony's uncle, and the resulting fued went on for a while.

More TV. Wasn't there a Simpsons where they're in a mall and they see a TV running The Postman DVD which is playing back an audio commentary from Costner, only Costner hasn't been pre-recorded for the track and is in fact hiding behind the TV doing the voice over live in the store?
Don't forget there's apparently a (Godfather DVD related):
Spoiler:Soprano's DVD gag hidden on the upcoming Godfather box set

There's someone watching a home movie on a DVD-like disc in Event Horizon.

There was also a mention of dvd in the Simpsons episode where the kids and Principal Skinner get snowed in and trapped in the school. He's showing them an old Christmas movie when what looks like a projector catches on fire. Nelson does his little Ha Ha laugh and says "You shoulda got a dvd." Principal Skinner then says "This is a dvd and takes out the flaming disk and throws it on the floor and stomps out the flames.

"In "2001, A Space Odyssey" They showed what looked like 16 X 9 video monitors on the back of each headrest on the shuttle to the Moon. Talk about foreword thinking. Hats off to Kubrik."

The Simpsons with the Postman was pretty funny. It's a long shot of Kevin Costner walking with his donkey and keeps saying "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry." over and over again and then asks Lisa for a sandwich. If he cut the length down it could have been a much better movie.

I believe I remember Tony Soprano had a laserdisc player in the first few episodes... he later got a DVD player from the jacked truck.
And they were indeed complaining about Godfather not being on DVD...

In "Soldier" with Kurt Russell, there are CD/DVD looking discs hanging as decorations in the homes of the residents on the trash planet. On the director's audio commentary, he does refer to them as DVDs and that in the future setting of the film (approx. 2030?), DVDs are obsolete.
