I learned about widescreen when I started seeing alternate, more expensive versions of hit movies on the store shelves. These had a gold or silver lining at the top or bottom and often said 'deluxe widescreen edition' or 'deluxe letterbox edition'... so that's how I first heard of letterbox/ws, and immediately knew it was superior.
Actually, now that I think about it, about 10 years ago they started a widescreen television channel in Holland. I guess that was really when I learned about it - because they started showing programs in letterbox a lot more.
