i just want to know what does everybody look for in a dvd player? what makes it stand out than the rest besides more features such as sacd, dvd audio etc...
what i want to know is what to look for in terms of video and sound processing? i would like to know so that i dont have to keep making mistakes in choosing a dvd player and having to return the unit back and forth. thanks for any replys.

The feature set your looking for is a good spot to start, as it will narrow down the playing field quite a bit. The basics I look for in a DVD player to even consider it are:

    No Chroma Bug
    No Additional Sharpness/Enhancements
    Little to no pixel cropping
    Very Good De-interlacing
No roll off on high frequency
    No White Crush
    No Black Crush

There is a very good article on Secrets of Home Theater ...

    DVD Shootout

The other features I look for in a DVD player are:
    HDMI or DVI-D output
    5ch DVD Audio

I used to have the Panasonic DVD-RP82 which was an awsome player. I'm leaning towards the Panasonic DVD-S97 now as it looks promising.
