Is it better to go all bookshelves for the surround channels or di-pole or a mixture of both????

For 6.1 or 7.1 I would recommend direct radiating all the way around.

That is correct. If you are going the bookshelf style speaker route you'll probably need to figure in the cost of a sub as well. HSU and SVS both make some really good affordable subs. Speaker stands will probably need to be considered as well.

floor standers do even better if you have the space all around.

I dont have the room for towers all around so I am going bookselves or di-poles for all surround channels.
