What kind of laserdisc player is required for playback of AC-3 encoded laserdiscs? I see some with RF outputs that require an RF demodulator, and I see some that also have optical or digital coaxial outputs. Can a player with optical or digital coaxial output the AC-3 signal directly to a DD5.1 receiver, or are those outputs only for DTS and PCM?

Thanks

You will need a player with a dedicated AC-3 RF output. The standard digital outputs on LaserDisc players will only output PCM or DTS audio from CDs or LaserDiscs, not Dolby Digital.

You will also need an RF demodulator, either outboard or built into your processor.

Go here for the excellent and comprehensive laserdisc chapter to the HTF Beginner's Primer and FAQ.
