Just a little question here. I'm in no way a computer genius. I've had one for a while which I just bought stock from my local dealer. If I did want to know what is inside my little grey box, Is there some way from windows that I can see what is in there? I mean I know I have a P4 processor and all that but if I wanted to be as specific as you guys, how would I find out? Please help this dope out!

Glad you like it. :) It is a little easier to read/use than the 'System Information' utility built in Windows.

80GB Samsung HD 7200 &
30GB Seagate HD

You want embarassing? My other system:

Dell XPS running a P2 at a cool 333Mhz. I have 128Mb PC66 ram, an 8 Gig HD and a 4 Gig HD (which totals an awesome 12Gig; I have no idea what I'll do with all the space!). Audio is courtesy of a 25 year old boom box, and the pride of the whole syste: a sweet 17" viewsonic monitor which takes 3 days to warm up properly if I turn it off.

Martin.

After a mysterious crash of my first ever AMD/Asus build, this is my 2nd major rebuild of this year-

Mobo: Intel D865PERL
CPU: Intel P4 2.4
RAM: 2x 512MB PC3200 in dual channel (I've got a 3rd stick, so I'll make it 2GB total at the next price drop, just because)
HD: WD 80GB, IBM 20GB, Maxtor 40GB internal, Maxtor 60GB FW external
OS: XP Pro
DVD: 2 yr old Creative
DVD-RW: Sony DW-U10A (hacked to be a DRU-500A)
Audio: on board

Modem: 3Com 2796
Cable Modem: RCA DCM 235 provided by Comcast

Memory Stick reader: Sony MSAC-US1
Case: Antec Performance Plus660AMG Mini-Tower (330W)

Pointing dev: MS Trackball Explorer
KB: Memorex cheapy with all the buttons I wanted
Scanner: CanoScan N670U
Printer: Canon BJC-620 (if I ever allow myself to run out of ink, this is the next component to be retired)

affiliated toys: iPod 30GB, Creative Nomad Jukebox, Canon S100 Powershot (2MP), AIBO ERS-210

Just ordered my new system! I'm so excited because all my waiting for a good price has paid off (at least i think so) This is what i got for $1,275.

Dell Dimension 8300 w/
Pentium 4 @ 2.8 GHz with 800 MHz FSB
512 MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz
120 GB serial SATA HD
4x DVD+R+RW Drive
128MB Radeon 9800 video card
SB Audigy 2
Windows XP Home

I was going to get the 9800 pro but i decided to save the $180 since i'm having Gregg Lowen out on Sunday to calibrate my Toshiba 40H80. From what i've heard it's not worth $180 to go with the pro over the regular version anyway.

Now i've just got to order my new monitor from newegg.com. I'm still deciding between the Viewsonic P95f+ and the NEC FE991SB.

Just to give the low end folks some company:

Mine's a Dell, XPS T500 I think? Purchased July 99. She may not look like much, but I've made some special modifications myself.

Pentium 3, 500 mhz, running Windows XP
384 MB of some kind of RAM
40 GB primary drive, 13 gig secondary drive (the original)
16 MB nVidia RIVA TNT Video card
Turtle Beach Sound card (not sure which one)
DVD drive and 4x CD burner
Real Magic Hollywood Plus DVD card
Hauppauge Win-TV tuner card
1.5 mbps max DSL connection
17 inch crt monitor
A million cables coming out the back (cable wire, vcr, stereo, speakers, printer, dsl, etc)

And for once, I don't have any upgrades planned for the forseable future! I've finally developed a machine that meets my needs comfortably -- heavy internet browsing, moderate downloading, minimal game playing. As old as it is, the only thing I wouldn't mind a change in is the CD burner. Works great, it's just slow.

Seriously! My 400mhz PC is topped out at 4.7gigs of HD and 196 RAM. Now that is the tortoise...but then my rabbit is the dual 2gig G5 so I shouldn't complain.

Here's an entry for 2nd-to-last place after Nicholas in the slow-boat lane: My PC (since 1997!)

Gateway G6-450XL (PII 450mhz)
384mb RAM (upgraded from original 128)
IBM 16gb HDD (original)
Western Digital 80gb 7200 rpm (upgrade - it was on sale!)
Onboard Soundblaster emulation sound (original)
ATI 7500 PCI video (32mb)
1x Toshiba DVD-Rom (original)
Linksys 10/100 ethernet LAN PCI card (upgrade)
24/10/24 Plextor CD/RW (upgrade)
MS Internet Keyboard (wore out original)
MS Intellimouse Explorer Optical mouse (upgrade/replacement)
Gateway VX900 19" monitor (original)
Boston Acoustics 4.1 speakers (original)
EPSON Perfection 2400 scanner
HP 5550 Printer
Linksys b/g wireless router
Windows XP Home (upgrade from W98)

Affiliated toys: Palm m505, Canon Powershot S50 camera and Olympus D340L camera (hand-me-down to the kids)

With so many upgrades, the upside is I know the inside of the case VERY well. The downside is that I think I have now maxed out the mobo, proc and power supply with upgrades :frowning:

Looks like I'll have to build a new one! Will probably take the WD drive over to the new machine and replace the IBM with a low-end new drive before handing the whole base machine down to the kids...

Doesn't count Martin, because you have another computer. I will send my specs tonight, but I guarantee my one and ONLY POS computer will be worse than anybodys!!!!!. I got you beat Martin, even if you aren't disqualified because of a second computer.
