Oh. Nevermind. I thought you actually watched the UHD.

I don’t trust screencaps so I’ll see for myself with my own eyes when I pick up the UHD tomorrow.

Thanks anyway.

I think you will like the improvements, The caps look very filmlike so I hope you can confirm that when you see it in motion.

Yeah. I’ve seen the film numerous times on video and recently theatrically. I know how it looks pretty well so I should be able to tell pretty quickly.

On a historical note, the Honorary Oscar of 1946 is inscribed as follows:

"To James Baskett for his able and heart-warming characterization of Uncle Remus,
friend and storyteller to the children of the world in Walt Disney's "Song of the South".

IMHO, this is quite an accomplishment for one single performance and/or film;
no less than when they gave an Honorary to Laurence Olivier for "Henry V";
Charles Chaplin for "The Circus";
or Harold Russell for "The Best Years of Our Lives".

Why American Graffiti? That was shot on a low budget in 2-perf Techniscope, mostly in the dark. I doubt there's more than 2K of real image detail on the original negative.

Because even so it may translate well as an upconvert together with HDR on an OLED tv with dark scenes may provide a better viewing experience. Besides they put out The Evil Dead filmed on 16mm on 4K UHD so even American Graffiti should be more than good enough.

Now that I am finally vested in 4k, my plan is not to replace all my Blu-ray titles. However, there are some absolute favorites that I hope will make its way to the format in the short-term.

I will list my short-term wishes in the first response to this thread.

Would love to know your most wanted 4k releases!

Please be realistic. The format is still young. Deep catalog titles will not be of main concern to the studios. They will look to put out popular mainstream releases for the moment. So, again, please be realistic in your responses.

These are titles you probably already own on Blu-ray but would gladly buy again on 4k

With the studios reading forum threads perhaps this will help them help us.

My list is not long. I kind of go month by month. And see what is out, and on sale.
The price has a big thing to do with it.
Just picked up CHIRSTINE. at WalMart. $20.00
My next buy will be 2001.

The Abyss - did this even get a BR release? Urgent! If I had to pick 1 it would be this.
Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
The Ten Commandments - not mainstream enough?
Godfather trilogy
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Alien quadrilogy
Rogue One - now that Disney are doing Star Wars movies in 4K, not gonna buy this until it's in 4K
Gravity - more to get the supposed demo-worthy Dolby Atmos track than anything on the video side

Excellent choices here.

I would say that there are three distinct reasons to do the upgrade: 4K, HDR and WCG.

4K seems to be driving the large format focus in some of these choices; I would love to see some epics and classic IMAX in the format for that reason. Arguing that the absence of detail makes a title unsuitable for the format IMHO over-emphasizes this aspect of UHD.

HDR would be a fantastic new way to watch classic film noir and other B+W titles with rich photography, in those cases where OCN exists. Coming from prints wouldn’t allow the same latitude, so there might be less advantages in those cases.

WCG is my favorite part of UHD. Take a look at the laser sights in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or the neon signs in Blade Runner. Also smooth gradients with no banding! The NTIs in the Abyss need those colors! BTW I don’t think the film ever got an anamorphic DVD, let alone Blu, which Cameron has had on a back burner for literally years now.

My list:
Star Wars: no subtitle
Also Empire and Jedi; gimme the green Sabre and I’ll forgive a little softness
Alien
The Abyss
Brazil
Star Trek Movies
Bond movies
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Tron
Planet of the Apes
Vertigo
North by Northwest
The Third Man
Baraka
Spartacus
The Ten Commandments
Fantasia
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Blue Velvet
The Thing (Carpenter)
The War of the Worlds (all)
Forbidden Planet

A good list is never finished, only abandoned...
