For me, from the games i've played, it has to be Metal Gear Solid2.

There's a few that come close like May Payne, GTA3, Twisted Metal Black, Devil May Cry, Tennis 2K2.

Living in the UK i haven't seen anything of Halo so can't comment on that.

Well, I strongly doubt I've played any game this year more than Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast - this thing is pure gaming addiction for me. I've a feeling this came out last year, but I didn't get a Dreamcast until the spring.
Max Payne was great fun while it lasted (though if it had lasted any longer I think I'd have got bored, to be honest). Bullet time is very cool indeed, but thats about the whole point of the game.
One afternoon of Super Monkey Ball has me lusting after a Gamecube something rotten, but as I've just agreed to buy a house and I'm getting married in the spring I'm far too broke [IMG]
Mr. Driller has become a regular feature in my Gameboy, and probably ties with Mario Kart as my favorite hand-held title for the year. The Dreamcast Mr. Driller was an absolute bargain at £9.99 as well. Coolest puzzler since the original Puzzle Bobble in my opinion.
I'm sure the genius that is Mario Kart doesn't need an introduction either - its the snes game on a handheld, and is mobile gaming perfection.

Hmmm... I can't narrow it down to one. This has been a GREAT year for gaming! Here's my 'top 5' in no particular order:

    1. ICO

    2. Grand Theft Auto 3

    3. Halo

    4. Silent Hill 2

    5. Klonoa 2

    Grand Theft Auto 3
    With honorable mentions to:
    Halo
    Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3
    Metal Gear Solid 2
    Twisted Metal: Black
I don't doubt for a second that Max Payne, Devil May Cry, and Tennis 2K2 should be on there, but I can't vote for them as I've only played the demos for the first two, and haven't played the third at all.

If those of you that have just played the demo of Halo and ranked it on that basis alone, well, I think that if you played the whole thing through it might jump up on these lists quite a bit. I just finished playing through on Normal. It was a blast. Now I'm trying various levels on heroic and legendary, what a challenge!!! The game is not the same the second time through. Making a simple choice like carrying a different weapon than the first time around makes a HUGE difference how the game is played.

Anyways, I look forward to getting Max Payne soon, and GTA3 as I am a big fan of the first two. We shall see then, we shall see!

Some good stuff listed here, but my pick:

Civilization III (or as it's better known in our house-Black Tar Heroin).

Halo. Currently destroying pulse generators in Heroic... this game is ridiculously hard.

Civ III - Probably the only game that I've seriously played this year after selling my PSX in June.

    Runner ups:

The Sims: Cute game, weird enough for me.

freecell: Jeez, I play this all the time at lunch and stuff.

Snood: Another little game at lunch

I should be buying an X-box sometime after xmas..

My pick is bit unorthodox but my game of the year is.....

    Silent Hill 2

No game has enthralled as much as this one has. It is the one game that lived up to and surpassed my every expectation.

    Runner-ups

Halo (very close, in fact almost tied with the above)

    Metal Gear Solid 2

Dark Age of Camelot (I never thought I would actually pay for a game on a per month basis but this one got me!!)

Oh yeah I forgot GTA3 is very high on my list as well.

Game of the Year - Star Wars: Rogue Leader - This is the first time that I've actually felt like I was playing a movie WHILE the game was being played. I'm not talking about non-interactive cut-scenes or anything like that. I actually felt like I was in a Star Wars movie...albeit one where the Empire always wins due to the incompetance of the Rebel pilots! [IMG]
Runner-ups (in no particular order): Grand Theft Auto III, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec, Pikmin
Haven't played Halo (had to choose XBox or Gamecube for this month...XBox coming in January!) but sound like that might make the list too!

Holy poo, this is a hard choice. I can't say a number one pic because each game/console has it's own qualities and as much as I'd like to ellaborate on that I can't..too much HW. [IMG]
From 1-5 (1 being the best; 5 the lowest)
1.Rogue Leader--> INCREDIBLE [Can't wait for my rears I'm ordering soon!!] GC
2.Super Smash Bros. (This will sky rocket on my list after X-mas once I get my second controller) GC
3.GTA 3--> So addicitve to drive the huge autobus and go into cinematic view and drop by the friendly people. [IMG] PS2
4.Star Craft: Brood War--> Fun playing with my best friend, even though I annihilate him. PC
5.State of Emergency (when I go on break at work in the mall, I go to EB to play this game, 100% riots baby!!)PS2

Metal Gear Solid 2- for me, even with Raiden, it more than lived up to the hype and surpassed the original in every way. Truly a piece of art.

    Runner ups:

    Rogue Leader

    ICO

    Silent Hill 2

Haven't played FFX, and it is being released this year, so I guess it's technically a 2001 release. Have to get back to this when I play the game, though.

Easy to limit to two, but tough to limit to one:

Phantasy Star Online (v1) and Grand Theft Auto 3. I may give the nod to PSO...

I'll throw another Grand Theft Auto 3. This game, on any platform, is the most free flowing, imaginative, open ended, player empowering game I have ever played. You XBoxers will love it next year, and I can't see how you'd have a different result.
